Fix or use ?

Not sure what to do with this. Its a Yoshimura Stage II camshaft


It will cost me £100 to get repaired, or I could just use it and see what happens, if it makes it worse however I may not not be able to get it repaired.

ok first i`m not realy an expert with cams , you could use it ,
but just have a thought about how much it will cost you
if you give it a try and it gets worth ,
 then you may well need not only a new cam
in the worth szenario you may well need a new valve ...a new piston ..a new crank......
 i would get the repair done and you are on the safe side

It looks to me like the case hardening is wearing through / breaking up.
What state are the cam followers in ? If there good they might not be for much longer.
It will probably work out cheaper fixing it now while it's out.


All those nice bits of metal floating in your oil !
Being a Yoshimura stage II I presume that it's not used for pottering out on Sunday mornings..


Reminds me of a certain Honda after oil changes have been neglected........
You get this sort of wear on the cam  ( £120ish ) then the cam followers go ( £20ish each ) then all the bits of metal wreck the bearing surfaces in the head ( £150ish ) It all depends on how daft the owner is ..

For what its worth i would have it repaired first.

Shame on you!  I second all of the above reports.  If the bike is to be used (by you!) then you already know the answer!  Probably indicative of all case hardening being a bit dodgy... 

Tho (being a scot, I am also sympathetic), what do you get for your hundred quid??  All 4 lobes hardened?

Is it guarenteed?? 

I suppose if you were super-strapped for cash, you could build it up, time the motor etc, see if its usable for street use, and then dive back into the cambox before putting too many miles on it/ too much swarf in the oil.  Which you'll be dropping after 100 miles anyway.

I saw your post on the supemono site, did it not turn anything up?

I'd use it. - looks like a nice little pocket to hold oil. 

There again I have a shed full of bikes that do not work and no mechanical sympathy.

fix or sell, it will only get (much) worse and as has already been pointed out, do you really want hardened swarf floating around your oilways
Definately do not use as is

Hmm thought that would be the response. End of project then, was hoping to use parts I already have, piston, barrel head, cam, springs etc. Back to the drawing board

No but since its an SRX, its part and parcel of ownership (gearbox gremlins)

Steve, I have a standard 600 cam you could have, but I suspect you weant something a bit lumpier??

Thanks for that. I have a Stage I cam but because it a regrind it tends to be very tappetty. The Yoshi cam is ground from a blank and has the same base circle as the standard and hence is quieter.

if it goes wrong sue tesco's. i'm sueing cos i used their petrol last year in my honda and now the rear sprocket is worn out.
it wasn't worn out before i put tesco's petrol in it.

Dave, after Rogs' comments on regrinding CG camshafts by hand it crossed my mind that I could drop some weld on using a TIG welder and then clean it up carefully with a wet stone. The thought didnt last long though.

Thanks for your confidence.  Seem to remember having something done with stellite weld once - I will remember what it was - if the cam is scrap there is no sense in not trying - drop of stellite in the hole, stone back with a green touch stone.

Oh before you all have a go at me - I always remember that the HST was scrapped because they could not get machining done to match a tolerence my Grandad achieved by hand - there are probably some lathes out there that originally had really super beds scraped by W Brookman, and many a pilot has had their lives saved by seats and chutes that depended on the quality of his hand finishing on the machines that produced them - hand finishing a cam is not a big deal - it is a case of skill (which I do not have) and patience (which I do not have)
