Cool XBR on ebay and couple of questions
« on: February 13, 2007, 10:02:52 PM »
Hi all

I was surfing on ebay and I noticed a very genuine XBR. Here`s a link:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HONDA-XBR500-G-Original-VERY-LOW-MILES-Superb-GENUINE_W0QQitemZ190081923429QQihZ009QQcategoryZ9806QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting

Then I noticed that someone asked from the seller that "Does the bike keep pulling right up to 100mph? Does it cut out on tickover? Does it pop & bang when u shut the throttle?" My own xbr pulls strongly only to 87 mph and it makes funny pop & bang noises when slowing down with gear. Sometimes it also turns off from idle on traffic lights.  Shoud I be worried or is this just normal behavior for an old bike? My bike has 72 000 km on the clock.

Hmmm it's a strong XBR indeed that "pulls all the way to 100mph", yes, they'll mostly do that, but hardly with much enthusiasm(!)
Popping and banging on the overrun is normally either a loud exhaust, a small air leak in the exhaust or very occaisionally an engine running lean, hardly a major cause for worry imho.
Some XBR's will stall unexpectedly, in my experience it means the tappets have been set to the original factory settings, I can't remember the later settings but I'm sure someone will be along with them... it cured mine completely after I reset them :)
Good luck! (and don't worry ;) )

Well theres no way I could say mine 'pulls right up to 100 mph' with any kind of gusto but its getting around the 50K miles mark and still goes like a good-un. Ity does fart a bit when you throttle down but I put that down to my exhaust and I don't really mind. It occasionally cuts out on tickover when its cold but once round the block and its ok. If someone could post up the revised tappet settings I'd be grateful.

Thats a nice tidy bike on ebay. Smarter than mine. You rarely see them with the seat cowl thingy these days. Can you not get them anymore? I've got mine but its cracked on each side by the mounting hole. Still looks ok though. And while I remember, has anybody come up with a cure for stopping your clocks fogging up in the cold?

Cheers everyone,
Dave

That's bollocks, if the oil has been changed on time then the bike should be fine. The only things to worry about are starter clutches on early models and the rear brake drum going oval due to corrosion behind the lining.

The club has a couple of members with 100k+ XBRs

The best thing to do is to buy a couple of 'scrapper' XBRs now whilst they are still cheap and available, that way you can keep it going for years.

as a rule don't believe all the bulls**t that goes around. i've read so many bike articles that are utter crap that i've lost count. As a rule if someone tells you certain bikes have problems, take it with a pinch of salt unless they owned one.

Most reliable bike i've ever owned?
1992 indian bullet (the cb500 is a given)

Least reliable bike i've ever owned?
    Bmw R100

I believe the revised tappet settings are 0.15mm inlet and 0.19mm exhaust. Also change the slow running jet to a 52. This cured my XBR stalling problem.

Also, the main jet was changed to a 158 as part of the factory mod for stalling. Having said that, I've got a 152 main jetted bike here that ticks over like a clock... apparently not all bikes suffered from the problem.
