Thanks for all your efforts.
The solution (maybe not the right one), 2 superbright LED's pinched from an old head torch, connected in parallel (and in opposition), a 2K resistor attached to one end of the pair, then the whole caboodle made up so's it fits into the existing lampholder. thus, one led winks for l/h indication and, lo and behold, the other winks for r/h indication. (lot of trial and error with the resistor value, which involved various test diodes going pop!, if i'd used my 45 years of wwoking in electronics, and a multimeter i could probably have correctly worked out the value  :) ) also, to be correct in all respects, there should be a 1K resistor at each end of the diode array, but i didn't have any....ok ok... I know that 2 x2k in parallel = 1k, but then i wouldnt get it all into the lampholder.....
