XR350/400/500/600 electrics fit an XBR engine?
« on: April 29, 2011, 04:40:39 AM »
So.. using the standard alternator from an XBR seems to be impossible with the battery I have in mind.
Do you guys think XR350/400/500/600 electrics fit an XBR lump? I think I need
  • Stator
  • Rotor
  • Regulator/rectifier

And does anyone know a link to one of these bikes' shop manual so I could check out their charger cirquit specs?

Hi Kaff

There's an XR600 manual here...

http://www.repairmanualclub.com/motomanuals/index.php?dlid=383

You have to register with the site to download but it's free and it's a very useful site. They also have XR400, XBR and various other RFVC manuals.

Good luck  :)

From what I remember the XL600R had a dual set up for the electrics with the street stuff seperately wired - might be worth a look.

The XR (250/400/600) R range don't have a battery, and have very basic electrics that only work when the engine is running (kick start).

You may need to look at XL range, XR (250/650) L, or SLR650.  Haven't got a clue what might fit sorry.

The reason I was interested in XR R range was that I was thinking about removing the battery completely from my XBR, because I was told that my standard XBR alternator will fry any tiny battery I hook it into. However, I've done a lot of research and am quite sure that alternators can't force feed current to a battery, if it doesn't need it. The only way this alternator could boil a battery was if the alternator or the regulator/rectifier was faulty.

I would be more concerned about melting the regulator by using too small a battery, if the battery isn't taking any power then the entire power from the alternator will be dumped through the regulator. The alternator has multiple windings, in stock form one set of windings is used for general electrics, another set of windings is switched in circuit when you turn the lights on to provide extra power. You could play around with the way that the coils are connected together to reduce the power from the alternator, maybe just hook up the lighting coil.
