hello peeps :)  i have just brought a old rough un loved srx6 , :'(  
i have taken off the carb's original i think .( i must add i am brand new to bikes and haven't even got
my full licence yet  :o but this bike is now my incentive, i am by trade a diesel engineer )
and have stripped and cleaned them set to the base setting ,  original bit's are hard to source any idea's
cleaned the plug ,checked the oil dumped the oil petrol (varnish)filled with fresh
 i think she should now run Ali being well any advice on bits i should look out for :)would be appreciated
also it has a nice chrome tank i would like to keep but it has several dents in it  if any one know,s
how to remove them or someone who can ? would properly need to have it re chromed.

Hi Tuggy

Nice tank, real shame about the dents. There are a few ways to attempt removing them but it really depends on the dent. I've managed to knock one out with a wooden rod in the past but I was lucky enough to be able to get to it. I've heard of people using compressed air to blow them out but never tried it, I believe there is a fairly high risk of disaster with that method.

Never tried them myself though.

I reckon if it's a smooth shallow dent you ought to be able to get it out ok but if there are any creases or 'pokey' bits it'll be a job trying to get it nice and flat again.

Bits available from Yamaha and often the best (but priccy), alternative is Wemoto. For further info go to SteveH's site, link here: 'SRX600', which is full of useful info, alternative parts etc. If you require a workshop manual pdf, please send by 'Personal Message' a mail to me and I will attach the pdf manual.

Looks as though you have the 'Grey Import' model '1JKL' from the pogo pillion footrests! :) :)  Hope you enjoy riding the beastie, once you get the 'full' licence, nice, light and slim.

No doubt further advice and 'opinion' from all and sundry will bombard you! ;)

Dings in chrome tanks? No idea! As long as it holds the petrol (euphamism for something combustable these days) and doesn't dribble from the seam around the back of the tank, be grateful you have a tank. Make sure you have a filter between the tank and the carbies and ensure the tap in the bottom of the tank isn't siezed, they can be a right 'Bar Steward'. Some 'Dry Fuel' additive might not be a bad idea as condensation can lie in the bottom of the tank, below the petrol tap level.  ???

welcome to the madhouse  ;D

Following an 'incident' on board a ferry on my way back from the 'North West 200' (row of bikes fell over in the hold) my srx6 tank got bent. (along with many other bits)....the claim was setted in full... allowing me to complete all the repairs myself(pic of the bike is on here somewhere (metallic blue srx6) i sent the tank to some guys in the sheffield area, they had quoted £130-£150 including carriage.
in the event it was done for £110....and a perfect job was made of it.....there is a vid clip on their website, but (for obvious reasons i guess) you can't quite see how they do it.....

it sounds expensive I know..... but was well worth it as far as i'm concerned..... now...here's the rub.... I can't find their details....but will keep looking...must be here somewhere  :D.

As far as parts are concerned, most parts are available from yamaha (at a price) many shared with XT's etc. also Fleabay is worth a look...parts NOT available from yamaha now, include....petrol tank, kick start lever (a weak point, prone to cracking), all the graphics.....

bridgestone battleaxe BT45's suit the bike very well..... and in standard form it performs very well....
personally, I change the oil AND filter regularly (every 2K miles) and remove clean and grease the chain at the same time. It is a bike that responds very well to regular maintenance....and IS easy to maintain yourself.

good luck with your new bike.....plenty of support available in the TC..... (especially if you live anywhere near Wales, own a camping stove (or several), and maybe have a liking for clapped out land rovers   .. ::) )

might even try some compressed air in the tank while i try them just a few psi
thanks for the workshop manual offer i have managed to down load one from
the web, a Russian site of all places .

i put a spare battery on the beast not the right size as i was afraid i might burn out the rectifier or sumthink
with a totally dead flat battery on the bike ,
it started  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D on about the third kick ran a little rich ,adjusted when nice and warm
bugger to start hot  :-\ :-\ :-\ but found switch to pri and she would start easily then switch too on

Aye tuggy,

Battery only required for lights, indicators, horn etc. Ignition direct from alternator.

Just be wary of the compressed air, in case it 'pops' a seam or 'thin bit'! ??? You'll no be a happy bunny then.

No choke, no throttle and no priming swings, when hot. When cold, full choke, turn over two or three times, turn on ignition and should start first swing. Typical 'big' single, can be a bit thrawn, but not as bad as a Goldie, Velo, etc with BIG valve overlap, they can just be ockered and cantank'rous! ???
