Stop me if you can....but!
« on: March 21, 2011, 08:27:23 PM »
Just to pick a few brains. The time has come to whack a new set of pads on the front brake. There are so many cardboard lookalikes out there, i need a bit of guidance as to an easy no hassle fit reasonably priced set of pads. If you can, on flea-bay. Its been a few years since I've put a set on and always got away with a g clamp and a pot of grease I've had for a few moons.Just passed another MOT no advisory. But the breaks squeal like a pig on the brake test machine... :o

I always use EBC - decent pads and not too expensive. Wemoto stock them standard or sintered.

They also sell stainless brake caliper pins and pistons at reasonable prices.

While you're at it, it would be a good idea to give the caliper a good once over as the brakes on XBR's have a tendency to stick. A thin smear of Copperslip grease ON THE BACK of the pads usually stops squeeling.

Thanks Steve. My main worry was getting a set that didn't fit. As you recommend them i feel a lot happier with that. While I'm at it i shall splash out on some copper grease.Unlike most bikes I've had ,this is the first one the front brake hasn't started to seize at some point. :)

To be honest i have never had this caliper apart, never needed to. But going by previous bikes this seems pretty similar in build. My main aim is to take the pads out, squeeze the pistons out a bit, clean up and grease back of pads and reassemble( in a haven't done this in a long time fashion), hoping my lovely neighbour doesn't come out for a chat as i am trying to remember the order they separated in. Shes got impeccable timing when it comes to pulling up in the car and giving you a 25 minute gossip. THEN....blow me! Which bit went where? But i digress..........

Have you thought about photographing things as you take them apart? Not infallible I know,  but always helps. I have just rebuilt the LH switch on the SRX and there must be a hundred parts inside them. Thankfully photos came in handy!

Ian :)

PS Can you send your neighbour round here? I could do with a distraction now and then! ;)

Cheers, i would say photographing my parts would be helpful but am afraid i would open a whole new can of worms for our bud Mr. scratchy. ;) . Yes Ian , i will send her around anytime you like. Maybe i might just get some work done on the bike instead of knowing the ins and outs of every bloody neighbour we have.....now moving to the rants section sorry.. ;D

Go to the link below, go down the column on the left to 'TechNtest' and click then go to 'maintainance of the front brake for XBR or GB'.  This will give you a step by step caliper strip and brake fluid change with photos in English..ish.

the site won't let you post a direct link.
