My bike wont start
« on: February 12, 2011, 07:03:03 PM »
This year for some reason my NX650 wont fire up after being stood over the winter. I have changed the fuel but am really struggling for enthusiasm. I have so much on this had to take  back stage. Whats the most common faults on these. I have charged the battery and its spinning over OK but not a single fire from it.

Hi Ken,

If you're sure you have fuel going through have you got compression? The reason I ask is that one of the XBR's favourite tricks after standing up for a while is to lose compression - if you kick it over and over for about 10 minutes it eventually comes back and runs perfectly!  I think something in the valve train must get hung up, but it's a common XBR problem.
Other than that, check the kill switch isn't shorting then work you way back through the electrics from the plug backwards. It probably a bad connection somewhere - the CDI and ignition electronics are usually pretty sound.

Don't you hate electrics!!  :-\

Hello
Thanks for the reply. Yes  I am sure is got compression you can here it pumping on the starter. It will have to be something like fuel gummed up although thats unlikley after just 10 weeks. Or electrical. I rocked the kill switch a few times and it dont have a stand switch. i know i should get stuck in but its just a bad time at the moment as I have too many projects on and cant get it inside. It flashed through my mind to sell it but  will hold on that for the moment. It never even fired once and thats very unusual

Regards Ken

You got new fuel in the tank but have you drained the carb to get the fresh juice down there?

Hmmm... my first thought was loss of compression as it is such a typical RFVC motor problem when a bike has been stood for a couple of weeks. It can take a fair few minutes of turning the engine over on the starter to get it back again (with the petrol turned off obviously).

Other than that, fresh fuel is always the next step. Modern petrol really does seem to have a shelf life.

Have you tried another plug in the plug cap to see if it's sparking? (I wouldn't try removing the bike's plug at this point, it's a fiddly job).

Was it stood in a garage or outdoors?

I think 10 weeks is probably enough time for a carb bowl full of fuel to go manky. If it were me, I'd sort that first then check for a spark with a spare plug. If that all looks ok but still no start, I'd be pulling the spark plug and sticking a new one in.

Does the NX650 have a clutch switch?
