« on: December 14, 2010, 09:14:11 PM »
hi does anyone know if its  an easy job to fit an electric start engine into a kickstart version or vise versa also are the barrels and cylinder head (Top end) able to cross over between the two models.
many thanks

Not 100% on the 400, if its the same as the 600 then front and rear head bolts have a different spacing on the later electric start engines. On the 600 I believe its posible fit the electric barrel and head, as a pair, to the kickstart bottom end (but Ive not tried it).

Ian is better placed to comment on fitting electric start 400 engines into kickstart frames

Hi, with regards to the 400s, the Barrel and pistons are (usually) the same on later twin shocks and early monoshock engines. I can give you the part numbers if you want but I dont think that you need them. The cylinder heads are the same for twin shocks and early monoshock engines (type 3VN1 and 3VN2). The later monoshock engines (3VN5) have a different cyinder head part number. I think this is normal for Yamaha to do this sort of mixing and matching, but at the end of the day MOST twin shock and monoshock engines have interchangeable parts (of the type you are speaking of). Hope I havent fogged the issue any more.

As for fitting the electric start engine into the kickstart frame....you will have to ask the question and I will try to answer it, there are so many detail differences, its impossible to let you know them all (that I found out anyway) in a post on here

Must admit I had always assummed all the twinshock heads/barrels were the same and different to the monoshock stuff. But as Ian pointed out there are shared top-end parts between the later twinshocks and the monoshock.
The change over occurs with this model
This has the hollw three spoke wheels and single 320mm disc.
Based on the parts list, this model (from chassis number 039101) and the later monoshock (3VN) share cylinder heads, barrels, head/base gaskets and bolts but not pistons or rings. My parts list doesnt cover 3VN5 so cant comment on that model
