GB 250, cbx250, MZ supa5, Suzuki GU250.

Hi all, Having previously owned a rat CB250rs, a bike which I got immense satisfaction and 20000 miles out with minimal maintenance, I sold my soul and bought a CBR600F. Good bike but I miss my thumper days. Simple question. I would like another thumper and have a shortlist of four. The bike will be used for my daily transport to and from work. Which one do I choose!!!!!!

Don't tell this lot but the MZ isn't really a thumper. As a lifelong MZ fan that's the one i'd go for. All the usual practical MZ features and a nice engine you can really wring the revs out of.

Buying wise I'd want one that came from someone who knows them well, probably an MZRC member or someone from the MZ yahoo group. The thing with two strokes is that they are in a constant state of destruction. If yours is about to sieze or needs a decoke it's no serious hassle to get into a usable state but you really want to know what you are getting. Price wise you'll be looking at £350-ish for something half decent. Electronic ignition is a good addition to look for.

If you go for the old Supa 5,convert it to 12volt electrics !

Must admit much better engine and frame than the later ETZ.

GB 250, rare and as an import job, the spares may be a problem. GU250, slow dog of a bike, GN250 in a ponced up image. The GN250 was one of the worst bikes I have ever owned! CBX250, not bad, but overweight really, and again rare.
Buy another CB250rs, top bikes and can be had running for a couple of hundred quid. I bought two for £160 last year, one of which was taxed and MOT'd! Chuck on a decent pair of shocks, upgrade the brakes and forks, and you've got a winner! Check out these Jap sites also, there are some great Thumper conversions including the RS into truly modern classics!
