SRX engine cutting out in the the rain
« on: August 10, 2010, 06:47:09 PM »
My SRX 600 1987 which has been totally reliable over the last 5 years has started to cut out in the rain, which I find very unnerving on the A12 commuting to work.
Have always kept the bike in good working order.
I changed the ignition coil, and have had a couple of different garages try to solve the problem, but to no avail.

Can any one suggest a course of action?

I had the same problem with my SRX, water being thrown up onto coil and plug cap, several suggestions from this forum was to fit a mudflap to the front mudguard, put a sheet of rubber/plastic in front of coil to protect from rain and I also fitted a jetski plug cap. No problem after these mods.

Good luck,

Mark

Aye soilman, and dig out the spark plug regularly. Failure to do so will end up with the plug siezed in the head and its removal requiring a cylinder head removal job! ??? A wee smear of copper grease on the threads, will also help prevent the corrosion. Enjoy the bike and go canny on that A12, gives I the ab dabs, even on 4 wheels.

All the best, Bill.

hi Bill, love me Bike, ta for the advice on the spark plug, i am pretty poor on the mechanical side of things, all i manage is a regular oil change and chain adjustment, but will check the spark out now you said

regards Soilman

fitted a mudflap to the front mudguard, bloody marvellous, been commuting to work through the worst rain and not a splutter! ;D

Have a look in the dark and look for the arching of the spark while wet. After that soak the lot in WD40.
HT side of the ignition system most likley  Coil, Plug lead, Suppressor cap.
