Another newbie XBR500 would like some help
« on: March 29, 2010, 04:41:10 AM »
Got my XBR of the bike lift and out of the workshop yesterday, and took it for a quick spin around the block to get it warmed up. And im more than happy with the way it goes  ;D, however it doesnt want to tick over even when warm  ???

Could anyone give me a few pointers please on the tickover issue.

(Sorry Simmo will ring you in the week I got carried away trying to get her roadworthy  ;D

I take it you've tried adjusting the throttle stop screw? ( apologies if I'm stating the bleedin' obvious here)

Is the plug OK? - good condition, correctly gapped?
Is the air filter OK? - Might not be able to draw air through at low revs if its clogged up.

If the above is OK it could be a blocked or partly blocked slow running jet or possibly the Pilot air screw out of adjustment - this should be approx 2 1/2 turns out - it's supposed to be set at the factory and not need adjusting but after all this time it's probable that someone's fiddled with it.

It should tick over at 1200rpm +/- 100 revs.

Thanks Steve I appreciate the tips.

Plug is new and gapped correctly and air filter is a brand new foam one. Though I suspect that the issue may well lie with the throttle stop screw as it does not appear to have any effect. So maybe the thread is fubar. Will also try the pilot air screw.

air filter is a brand new foam one.

Has it got a ramAir type aftermarket filter then?  - Standard filter is paper - may be part of the problem, may have effected the jetting. Sounds like it might be worth checking the carb out.

Standard specs are:

Float level                 18.5mm (0.73 in)
Pilot screw opening      2-1/2 turns
Main jet                     #152
slow jet                      #48
idle speed                   1200 +/- 100 rpm

If you need the workshop/parts manual, PM me your address and I'll send you a copy on disc. ;)

The original paper filter was very clogged and even with a good blow thro with air, i didnt really want to reuse it. When I bought the new chain and sprockets from B&C , they also had a foam filter for £8.26 and its the same shape as the original so fits in the air box.

Anyway I had a closer look yesterday and the throttle stop screw is not doing anything at all, its just turning with no up or down movement. So today its off with the carb and I can check the other settings as well. Ta mate. ;D

Thats of course if errr indoors has reduced her list of things for me to do.

If you didn't know they come off to the left hand side as you sit an would suggest some masking tape round the frame as they are a tight fit to come out. Undo the three bolts into the engine first and the inlet mount will slide out to give you room (take out the top two and the bottom one you just need to loosen as this one is not into a full hole) Lube the tickover screw well as they seize up.

Cheers

Siezed up well and truly and wouldnt come out even with a dose of plus gas. In the end I took the carb off (tight fit isnt the word) it did helped to remove starter connection lead. And got the slip joint pliers on it.

Its all back together now and amazingly it runs  :o
