Non Thumper Air Filter question

I don't suppose any of you Gents would know how to get the air filter out of a small motor Guzzi twin without taking the engine out?

My dads 750 needs a service and the air filter seems to be in a box in the V between the pots. The box is closed by a long laggy band style spring, but there looks to be insufficient clearance to get the lid out past the frame and coils. The Haynes book wants us to take the carbs, battery and airbox out so we can slide it back along the motor!

Everytime I work on this thing (take the sump off to change the oil filter etc.) I'm so glad I bought the Triumph! The Bullet oil change might have been a 15-point sequence with squirts here and a drop there, but at least the only thing that really left the bike was the oil! Maybe this should be in rants?

Aye Andy,

Contacted my friend in IoM who used to run a 500 and now runs a heavily modified Breva 750 for touring. I copy his comment below:

"Sorry but the Haynes manual has it right, carbs off and battery out to give it room to be removed. Most people don't bother putting it back but fit two K&N's instead."

Andy , as an aside have you got the airfilter out of the Bonnie ,without shaving the paint off the frame rail ? .I ask you ,what a complete T*!t.

Oops.

Just to really put the boot in, I've got a lump of Russian iron and some Yorkshire wiring in the way, so I have to work upside down hanging over the seat. Not good for the back

Thought as much ,I have a brand new K&N ready to go .I reckon after half a dozen changes , I will be down to bare metal , thanks to the cheese grater effect .What Plank designed that ,I wonder .5mm to the left would have done it.
Once more Joe public become the R&D department for a major motorcycle manufacturer .
