engine casing polishing
« on: February 22, 2009, 09:47:21 PM »
Ive just done an oil change on my srx4 and the warm oil seems to have got under the lacquer below the filter housing and lifted the lacquer. The lacquer is generally a bit crazed anyway, so can anyone recomend a product to remove the old lacquer, what to use for polishing, and what brand for the new lacquer? any hints or tips greatly appreciated.
Regards,

Paint stripper is effective in taking it off, just take care to keep it away from the frame etc. Loads of ways to polish, most of which involve time a patience. A polishing wheel on a bench grinder can help uot you obviously need to remove the casing.
Fine wet and dry and WD40 for any corrosion, followed by fine wire wool and lots of metal polish.
As for re-laquering I have tried the spray can stuff from halfords but it just peels off. Ive also used yacht varnish, this tends to be a bit yellow but does seem to stay on better, not sure how well it can handle engine temperatures though.
I believe its possible to clear powder coat, but havent tried it myself.

Thanks,Steve, very helpful, Ive seen some lovely examples in the photo gallery but Im hoping that I can get away with lacquer off & then fine wet&dry and then re -lacquer, rather than a high degree of polishing. ,,,,,,,,,,,,Or maybe I'll just get used to it and obssess about something else instead !

Andy.
