SRX400 ignition
« on: May 06, 2007, 12:10:10 PM »
I have just bought a 1987 SRX400 which has very little power.  On checking the electrics I realize that the ignition pickup is faulty - it's a little sealed black box with 3 wires coming out of it - could anyone help me to locate one of these? - BAT motorcycles only sell it new with alternator attached at a corresponding price - ....thanks....Paul in Cork Ireland

Youll be lucky to buy the pickup seperately. Out of interest how is it faulty ?
http://www.electrexworld.co.uk/erol.html do a replacement.

AFAIK the same unit off an XT550, XT400/600 (82-89ish) or an SRX600 twin shock should be interchangeable. That may help to find a secondhand one. They're not prone to failure, but if you can find a burnt out stator, it will probably have a good pickup attached.

What makes you think it is the pickup?......never heard of them going faulty....from what you say the engine runs, and that implies the pickup is working, as is the CDi unit, is it that you have a weak spark?, if so i'd check the coil/connections/earthing/plug cap/plug......i suppose it's possible that the rotor is demagnetised but thats very rare on these bikes too as far as i'm aware, is it charging the battery/running the lights ok?....that would indicate the rotor is ok.

What makes me think the pickup is not working is that there are 3 wires coming out of the pickup to a block connector - I have a friend who also has an SRX400 - when I checked his the resistance across either of the two "vertical" connections and the horizontal one was 130 - on mine there is infinite resistance between one of these and the horizontal connection - this would tell me that there must be a break somewhere in the pickup?....Paul

It is possible that there is a break in one of the wires rather than a fault in the pick up. I have experienced a similar problem and solved it with a crimped connector. Mart

Thanks for the reply - I checked the wires coming out of the pickup with a multimeter and the fault was still there which would tell me the fault is in the pick-up - there's one winging its way to me in the post so we'll see if power will be restored!
