1995 aprilia pegaso
« on: May 17, 2007, 10:25:40 PM »
i have recently become the proud owner of a mint condition 95 pegaso which after 2 days refused to start but was resolved by the dealer thankfully but it seems to be hunting and on a semi regular basis she seems to backfire and cut out, which really screws with my confidence as the last bike i rode was a szr660 which cut out halfway through a fast corner and tried to kill me it has taken 5 years for me to get back into riding so i would like to sort this one, get my bottle back and get back into bikes big time again(sorry for all the waffle). anyway i was thinking of starting with redex or carb cleaner it always worked on my dodgy cars but i am not very good with bike mechanics! thanks in advance!!

My first visit would be a carb strip and clean - cutting out and hunting sound like modern petrol gumming up a jet  or water in the tank / float bowl.

More importantly - welcome and enjoy.  Nice to see new faces (well log in names).

Aye mrbrownstone,

TAKE IT BACK AND ASK THE DEALER TO RECTIFY THE FAULTS!

Goods not fit for purpose etc.

Could be furred up carbs, split inlet hoses, blocked fuel filter, condensation in the bottom of the tank. My F650 did this trick after water was trapped around the top of the tank [because the drain tube was blocked] and went into the tank when filling up with petrol. Coughing and banging with 'kangaroo' progress until fuel system drained and new fuel filter installed with clean fuel.

Hope this helps, Bill

Actually ignore what I said and listen to Bill.  A bike from a dealer should work unless it is a trade sale - then you are on your own - I know some try to get away with 'trade' sales to the public but it aint ethical, moral and probably not legal.  However they have fixed it once so I guess it is not a 'trade' sale.  So get them to collect it - it is not safe to ride in your opinion - and sort the running to your satisfaction.

Whilst you are waiting you could become a member here and join in the conversations that are mainly thumper related - but some real interesting digressions.

Hi mrbrownstone
Still hanging on to the pegaso? spoke to you at your work place glad you can join us.

I would go for the carb strip using a can of carb cleaner, check the fuel tank for water and make sure the breather in the tank is not blocked. sounds to me to be more likely a fuel problem. It might be worth taking it to a dyno if you can't get to the bottom of it. There is a good one in Swinton I'm told. they can usually pin down faults pretty quickly.
I  you fancy a ride out at any time leave a message on the forum.
Or if desperate (and you have to be desperate) I could pop across to have a look
