Dead XBR - No spark!
« on: May 25, 2019, 05:08:54 PM »
Hi Guys, I haven't been around much lately - things have been happening and bikes have been on the back burner for a while. I did get the XBR out to meet up with Timbo & crew at the Lincoln Bomber Command Centre last summer at that's where my problem started.

Got the bike out that weekend and it started fine, ran fine, everything hunky dory  ;D. Run it all weekend, no problems , put it away in the garage, got it out again a couple of weeks later and ....nothing....dead... >:(

Didn't seem to be sparking, but to be honest thats as far as I got and haven't really done anything to it since. Got it out again today to try and sort it and as I suspected there is no spark at all. Plug is good - tested in the lawnmower. Tried swapping HT coil and CDI unit with know good spares - still nothing. :( :( :(

I'm kind of hoping the problem lies in the wiring to the ignition switch/kill switch or the switch itself although all the other electrics, indicators, lights, horn etc work fine. No obvious wires broken, shorting or loose connections that I can see anywhere.

The all black and white wiring diagram in the manual doesn't really help but electrics aren't my strong point anyway.

Any suggestions as to where to go from here  :-\

You have of course checked the kill switch position....

Might it be worth checking the engine earth strap for poor connections? Otherwise you seem to have covered all the bases Steve, so I agree with your wiring or switches diagnoses...

Hope all's well with you and yours SteveC? Good to have you back here. If I was you, I'd be taking my own advice and getting the multimeter and contact cleaner out. Best of luck.

Some progress. Had no spark, took the headlight out and pulled out the wiring with the idea of checking it all, tried a kick and it now sparks!! ;)

Looks like some sort of bad connection so I'll be working through the wiring tomorrow and try to find the problem.
