For those interested in the EPIC study, go here for a definitive breakdown...

this is the study I'm involved in
I think other universities are running their own EPIC studies

Very interesting, thanks Steve.

I see they're no longer recruiting as it's a longitudinal study. Some of the results they're reporting are interesting.

yes, I have been following it over the years... obviously as I'm (and SWMBO) have been involved since the start...
they (Cambridge team) threw a party for all of us ageing participants , loads of plonk and canapés etc... all the stuff they have spent the last 20 odd years telling us to avoid ;D .
interesting to note that there have been very few who have fallen by the wayside over the years.

I suspect that people who are interested enough in this sort of stuff have generally active minds so probably tend to survive longer.

I'm a member of a thing called Birmingham 1000 Elders which has an annual conference and I'm very impressed by some of the older (than me anyway) people there.

As opposed to the University of the 3rd Age (local branch at least). I went to one of their sessions and after 20 minutes I think I was the only one still awake - and that was only just.

I read the Summary Findings and Results section - very comprehensive and interesting. It would seem that when we read in the paper about eating our 5 a day and exercising regularly, it's studies like yours we have to thank. Nice also, that the organisers threw you a party  with, "forbidden fruits"! :)

that is very strange Ian... as U3A in this area is going great guns, loads of meetings about a wide variety of subjects, I'd say 95% of which are interesting and well presented... agreed, there  has been the odd one (or 2) where I have lost the will to live !

Bob King, original owner of Bob King Motorcycles, from Bedford was riding a Honda Blackbird when I last saw him and he was in his 80s. He wasn't that young when I bought my Trident from him in 1970. I am not sure when he died but he was a real character.

Here's a YouTube video showing just how bikes will keep you young at heart. Love his wife's (?) encouragement and his final words!

How about this lady.

It's easy to forget about the ladies and I've no excuse, as my mum's cousin has ridden all her life. She's mid-seventies now and this pic is her arriving for a family wedding, 5 years ago, on her BMW R1100S;
