Long barrel nut corroded in place

Got the head off my SRX engine - no nasty surprises, cam journals look good.

But, went to remove the barrel and one of the long nuts rounded - closer inspection revealed that it is corroded in place. The ally of the nut has swollen to the extent that it has merged with the second-bottom cooling fin of the barrel.

Fortunately the cases are already cracked so are destined for my aluminium-melting furnace, so I am happy to waste the stud.

Any tips from someone who has been here before?

I was thinking of centre-punching the chalky blob as close to the bottom as possible, then drilling through starting at 3mm and working up.

Dunno about your specific case, but cycles of heat and plus gas usually have things looking more like metallurgy than geology! Small wire brush?

My methods are antiquated so there'll be a modern quick fix no doubt.

Well, I managed to get the b*stard carbuncle off. Drilled through then managed to get it off with what little remained of the hex part.

Next problem...
