SRX Fuel pipes
« on: March 24, 2007, 07:58:11 PM »
Which way round? After taking bike for MOT, which it passed, I decided to double check that my running problems were not fuel based. Took the tank off, disconnected both fuel pipes, checked and cleaned fuel tap/vacuum diaphram, but did not make a note of which pipe goes to which outlet (directly under the tank with on/off). As one is 'normal' and the other 'reserve' it must be important which is connected to what or you could be on 'normal' and completely run out of fuel.

Any info. would be much appreciated..............

PS After the MOT I took the bike for a twelve mile run (ie. not the most direct route from the test station to home) and the problem of lack of power until after five miles did not manifest itself. It really felt like fuel starvation, hence the above, as it lasted for the whole journey. Need to get it sorted soon or I will be leading the ride-out for the Peak District get together at forty-five flat out!

I seem to remember the Back pipe on the tank goes to the Bottom. I'll check later. Have you tried that Alternator yet ?

In a word - "No!" but maybe tomorrow! Swapping CDI unit & ignition coil didn't make any difference. I will have to bite the bullet soon.................

Oh the joys of motorcycles...................

Put it all back together as per previous info., and then decided to have an early morning try-out. So first thing this morning (forgeting that the clocks go forward) togged myself up and proceded to kick the thing into life. And kicked. And kicked. Took off togs, and kicked. And sweated. Did I put the pipes back the right way? Do I need choke? Is it flooded? Finally it spluttered into life, and sat lumpily ticking over. Togs back on. Phutut, it stalls - ba**ard! More kicking, more sweating - are you getting the picture. Sudden thought "Having cleaned and oiled the petrol cap could it now be air tight?" - slightly illogical but these things happen at moments of stress, and it has a breather pipe - so I open the fuel cap. Another thought occurs "Is there any petrol?" Er, no! Did I feel a t*at or what! Luckily I had a gallon of fuel from when I was MZ racing (about six years old by now and probably pre-mix). Hey Presto, its running again! Finally took it for the test run, and guess what? It still doesn't want to know anything above 40mph!

BIG HAIRY BO**OCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alternator here we come. All I need now is info. on:

Where are the oil drain plugs?
Is there anything I need to be aware of when taking the alternator cover off (which is on the lefthand side when looking to the front - yes)?

Two oil drainage plugs, one on the oil tank the other on the left hand side underneath the the gearbox sprocket.
there should be no problem taking the casing off if you lean the bike right over you don't even need to drain the oil (if your tight fisted) I find an old mattress useful. Note the expression OLD if you use your own mattress this may cause complication of a marital kind later on and I except no responsibility.
The big problem with the oil is making sure there is no air lock. to check for this you should prime the system by either kicking it over or running down the street in gear(O how the neighbours laughed). There should be oil being pumped out from the screw hole next to the oil filter housing on the off side(right hand side).
I'll pop down for a rideout or meet somewhere, when you have managed to exceed 45mph, if you want.

ps I am bidding for an old srx 400 on ebay. There may be a spare engine needing a top end if I win it if you fancy just changing engines.

Cheers John. Managed to find the information via www.repairmanualclub.com/. Decided to change oil as it was in there when I got it. Sadly the gasket broke so will need to order a new one before I can see if swapping alternators makes any difference.
