Cleaning up block connectors
« on: November 25, 2013, 08:35:34 PM »
Anyone got any good tips on how to clean the contacts/connectors in block connectors. Ideally I would like a magic potion I can dip the connector in assembled and 30 minutes later the contacts are all sparkly. I doubt this exists so do anyone have any neat tricks ?

Aye Steve,

Cotton buds, brake cleaner and ACF50 applied lightly by cotton bud or spray afore assembly.

If the corrossion is obstinate and you can get the terminals out of the block connector, then the fibreglass fibre abrasive pens do a grand job of removing corrossion with little or no dimensional change. Ebay Lot No. 141114142087. No connection with seller!

A small 'pointy' scalpel blade (Swann Morton No.11 Non-sterile blades on specific handle) can also be useful. Ebay Lot No. 321005245283. No connection with seller!

If things are really bad and there is sufficient length in the loom, lop the block connector off the loom, replace with new connector, soldering the wires to the connectors and applying ACF50 to all before assembly.

My regards, Bill

The cheapest Carburetter Cleaner you can find plus cheap children's paint brushes (Poundland ?) as well as WD40......between the two of them you'll do a great job.

One forum suggested soaking in vinegar, I might try this on an old harness.
Bill, the pen and scalpel approach look useful as well.

Aye Steve,

As an aside the fibreglass abrasive pen is also very good for cleaning up casting mating faces afore applying the thin film of sealant or gasket. Others may 'blast', 'dip' or scour the gasket goop/gasket away, but I just find some light abrasion with the pen and gentle slicing with the scalpel very theraputic.  ::)  Same as others enjoy buffing alloy until they require snow goggles!  8) ??? 8)

Whatever you decide, good health.  :)

My regards, Bill.
