XBR 500 electronics - generic parts?
« on: October 16, 2013, 12:06:40 AM »
Hi folks,

I recently picked up an old 'fix-'m-up' XBR 500. I think it is one from 1987. It had been laying in the garden of a friend of mine, and in his absence almost all electronic parts were stolen (cut out of the wiring-tree). So, I am missing an IGNITION COIL COMP., a NOISE SUPPRESSOR CAP ASSY., a STOP & TAILLIGHT SENSOR, a C.D.I. UNIT, a WINKER RELAY COMP., etc.. I think the only thing that I do have is the REGULATOR RECTIFIER ASSY. (see http://www.bike-parts-honda.com/pieces-honda-detail-5637-13MK4F21-XBR500H-1987-F__2900-XBR+500.html)

Because all these things have literally been cut out of the wiring tree, I'm also missing most of the connectors on the wiring-tree. So, I'm thinking I might have to get me a replacement wiring-tree and all the electronic parts.

Now I am wondering: are the parts that I need specific for this particular bike, or are there generic parts? I'm asking because I live on a small island in the Caribbean and most certainly will not be able to get any honda-parts for this bike on the island. (Plus generic parts, if they exist, are probably cheaper).

Cheers!

The CDI is a Honda-only item, but units from other large Honda singles of the age will work (they have different advance curves, but so what?). The coil is generic and any plug cap will work fine. You don't need a tail/stop light sensor, just a switch operated by the rear brake lever. Winker relays are pretty much the same on all bikes, I think.
