XBR clutch check / service
« on: July 21, 2013, 11:47:09 AM »
My clutch has started to slip at high rpm's. When doing an extreme acceleration, past 5000 rpm I can almost go through all the gears without an instant drop in rpm. Since I haven't done a clutch service before, I could use a few tips.

  • Does the XBR need a complete oil drain/change in order to check the condition of the clutch plates? Meaning, can I just open the cover, take the plates out for measurement, clean the lot and put it back together if they're within spec? I'm asking this so I don't preorder parts I don't need (plates, springs)
  • Can I dissassemble the clutch without the Clutch center holder (07724-0050000)? I've read somewhere that in order to loosen/tighten the lock nut, just pop the bike in gear (4th), hold the rear brake down and go for it?
  • Any other tricks?

My XBR's clutch started slipping after the engine was increased to 600 cc.I cured it by fitting a set of EBC heavy duty springs. No special tools required.

Thanks for the info, I don't think my XBR has a significant increase in hp, only exhaust and intake have been modified.

I'd like to just check wether the plates and springs are in spec before ordering anything. Will the XBR bleed out much oil if I just pop the lid off and take the clutch apart for measurement?

Run it for a few minutes to make sure there is not too much oil in the crankcases, then lean it well over away from the clutch side. There will always be some oil,but hopefully not too much.

I opened the clutch cover today for measurement. All the clutch plates were well within spec, but the springs were borderline service limit (one was exactly at the service limit). So I'll go ahead and get a set of EBC heavy duty springs, hopefully that'll do the part. The clutch outer basket had some minor grooving, but nothing alarming.

Hi Kaff

Heavy duty springs are likely to cause a slightly heavier feel at the lever. It would be worthwhile to use a fine file to take out the wear in the clutch basket to minimise this.

Just a thought.
