Joined a month or so ago, I know nothing about jap singles, am kicking myself I didn't buy
the XT500 a mate tried to flog me a few years ago, for a hundred quid.
I am interested in a single to ride and am wondering about using a jap motor in a 30's British
frame, I have a few frames and I am a messer, always making something and find it hard to
leave things stock.

If you do that, it would be worthwhile to install modern brakes as well. With three times the power and today's traffic, you wouldn't last a day with the old brakes.

Hi There,

I remember some years ago reading about a chap who put an XBR 500 engine in a AJS/Matchless rolling chassis which looked pretty good.  The XBR engine might be good because it isn't too tall. Problems might be running the drive - XBR's chain runs on the left and a lot of Brits run on the right.  If you wanted to keep it looking original you might be able to rig up a hydraulic drum brake system- they used to do that on Cossacks.

Growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional!

I am not sure about the drive chain, there shouldn't be any problem as the frame in question was made
into a swing arm frame by some bloke while he was in the RAF during the war. The annoying thing is
the blokes grandson thought it was junk so he hacked bit's of tube out of it. So do I put it back to original
or repair it and have a modified frame.
Brakes are overated;-)
