Have you read the old Classic Mechanics article on how to do it by Dr Rod?

If you're running the standard Domi lump you can fit the XBR carb and retain the airbox with a bit of modification - this is important as CV carbs can be a bitch to get running properly on aftermarket filters.  You also need to swap the Domi clutch basket and primary gear for the XBR ones to get the gearing right - it's a straight swap.

You can fit a smoothbore Mikuni flatslide but you really need to use a hotter cam and flowed head to make it worth the expense.

this is a useful article - follow the links at the bottom of the page. http://lovik.tripod.com/Clubman.html

If you haven't read the Classic Mechanics article give me a shout - I can't find the link for the page but I can Email you the article if you need it.

(added later - Sorry I typed all this without having closely read your original post, sorry if I'm teaching my grandmother to suck eggs)

The chain sizes are different and the Domi output shaft has different splines to the XBR one (of course!  ::)) It's best to fit a Domi engine sprocket and get B&C Express to make a 520 rear sprocket and then run a 520 chain (as opposed to the XBR's 525)

I believe the block connectors on the engine wiring are different so you can either fit an XBR generator and ignition pick up or just mess about with the Domi connectors to mate up with the XBR's (I need to check the second bit).

You can use the Domi carb mated up to the XBR airbox or run it with a K&N. Dynojet do jet and filter kits for the Domi (but not the XBR  >:().

XBR primary gearing helps a lot as it makes the gear ratios more road biased.

Engines are externally identical so no lugs or fittings need modifying.

The bike won't be much faster (in terms of top speed) but you will get places quicker because of the improved pull out of corners.

HTH.

I have no idea why Honda didn't build it that way to start with  ::)

I'm about to slap my old 650 (kickstart) motor back into my sidecar bike and after that I will be modding an SLR motor for my cafe racer.
