Keeping my underneath clean..........

Hi All,
As it's the middle of summer- thought we could have a chat about the forthcoming winter.....

I have quite a nice bike for winter and want to try to keep it that way.

What are the tips for keeping the salt/ rust at bay?   

Is there any spray on stuff to recommend that washes off ok in the spring?

Hi John,
          There are several good sprays around. Scottoiler do one which is supposed to wash off.... http://www.scottoiler.com/FS365-Protector.asp, or there is ACF50 http://www.acf-50.co.uk/

WD40 is ok if there is no rubber in sight...or there is an alternative which goes way back when....we used to "dissolve" Vaseline or other proprietory petroleum jelly in Petrol then spray it all over..this left a thin film of Vaseline all over where you sprayed when the petrol evaporated. This used to be reasonably cheap but fuel isnt exactly cheap now :(

On my old GN250 work bike I used a mixture of grease and old oil liberally spread around ( BUT NOT NEAR BRAKES AND TYRES !!!!!).  Looked 'orrible but kept most of the worst of the winter crap off. A good wipe down followed by WD40 and hot soapy water got most of it off in the spring.
Growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional!

It's fine with a mixer but I couldn't drink it neat  :D

Used it on a BMW years ago, tended to melt on engine cases and quite difficult to remove. Other than that it worked quite well.
