XBR Kickstart Problem
« on: October 31, 2009, 10:27:43 PM »
I've got the opposite problem to pete b - the 'leccy on Wee Arfur is just fine, but the kickstart lever refuses to budge.  No, really, I can't get the blimmin' thing to swing out into the kick position, it just moves about an inch and then sticks like there's some kind of obstruction.

Whatever it is that it's sticking on, it's pretty strong coz my 'socket extender' (4ft cut off from a length of scaffold pole) won't budge it.  There's a screw runs right through and doesn't appear to do anything, apart from that ...... ?

Anyone got any ideas?  My image as a rufty-tufty biker is suffering every time I push a button to start the beastie instead of doing it the manly way!

HI, there is a ball bearing on a spring inside the shaft of the lever. it will have rusted in the locked/ closed position. take off the kickstart lever and leave it over night in old engine oil which will loosen it off or lots of wd40 but dont force it as the lever will snap!!!! if the over night in oil doesnt do it then apply some heat and bobs your uncle. just make sure you dry the oil off before you heat it up with a flame!!! hope it goes well?

Finally had a look at the beggar this weekend (all my fettling time has been consumed by the Wee SR125, now sorted, and the wife's car ....).  Ball & spring a bit rusty, but a good soak in WD40 and a quick greasing restored bounce, however the ball still locks in position in the wee hole - looks like the hole has deepened through wear over the years and it's now just enough to hang onto the ball.  So I popped out the spring and slapped in a weaker one (from a biro, OK?) - seems to be a bit better, but I'll have to monitor it for floppiness, can't have the lever banging my knee on every right-hander, can I?

I'll give it a couple of weeks to see how things go, then if it proves unworkable .... still got that nice one GC?

Thanks all.
