Suspension upgrades
« on: October 23, 2009, 12:56:45 AM »
I have a 1985 SRX 400 twinshock and I would like info on upgrading the suspension. I understand that alot of parts can be interchanged on these bikes. I plan on changing the steering head bearings to tapered roller instead of the ball bearings that are there and would like to know if other front and rear upgrades are available and what has been tried. This is an ongoing project bike and will be riden but never finished. I plan to ride it hard, put it away wet and keep it till I die and bequeith it to my kid. I also live where few people even know what kind of bike it is when i ride by, I plan on getting rid of any Yamaha markings on it and letting people guess what it is. It sure is a hoot to ride.

Well, yes, a taper bearing head set is a good idea, had mine on for 8 years, trouble and almost maintenance free.
you can get progressive springs for the forks , coupled with a new set of seals (i reccommend yamaha seals....not had a lot of joy with aftermarket jobs) and some 15 grade fork oil, makes a great job of improving the front end.
A set of Hagon shocks at the back look good and work very well, i suppose the whole kit and caboodle is going to set you back 160 to 200 notes, or look on fleabay, and the TC for sale area, may be some bargains to be had.
