I'm smokin'
« on: August 30, 2009, 10:40:47 AM »
Or rather the SRX-4 is.

I recently did a service on it and now it smokes when I start it up in a morning - defintely an oil-burning smoke, but mostly white.  It disappears after a while when it has warmed up, and it seems to be running very well.

I'm wondering if I've messed something up.  I checked the valve clearance as part of the service, and one of the exhaust valves seemed to have no clearance at all, so I opened it up until it seemed right.

What do you reckon - check the clearances again, or is it a head off job to see what's going on?  As some of you know this is my first thumper, so I've very little experience of them.  I have worked on a lot of other engines in the past,  but all multi-cylinder jobs.

I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks

Trevor

Aye Trevor,

By all means check the valve clearances if it calms the mind.

However, did you change the oil and filter? From reading your message, I think that you may have overfilled the oil. They are not the easiest to get right if you are relying on the dip stick as they trend to 'wet sump' despite running a 'dry sump' system. Also, did you bleed air from the system via the bleed screw on the top of the oil filter cover? See the link below! :)

I hope this explains things for you.

All the best, Bill.

Thanks, Bill

I think you may have hit the nail on the head.  I'll drain the oil from the crankcase then check it at the tank.  If there's enough in, I'll run  it and loosen the bleed screw again to check for pressure.

That should do the trick.  As you might have guessed, this is my first dry-sump engine.

Cheers

As Bill mentioned the dipstick level can vary quite a lot. When I change the oil I generally make sure its well drained thean pour in a measured amount, using a plastic kitchen jug for measuring the correct ammount. I usually add between 1-1/2 to 2 litres, bleed the system, then run the engine for a minute, switch off and top up with the rest of the oil.

Thanks for the help, guys.  That's sorted out the problem.  I'll be sure to measure the oil next time rather than relying on the dipsticks (the plastic one on the bike and the one who's writing this  ;))

Cheers

Aye Trevor,

Pleased to have been of help and don't beat yourself up about it. Been there! ;)

Old Velo's and some AJS's like to 'wet sump' as well, back past the oil pump! The stop cock put in the oil line to prevent it is all when and good until you forget to turn it 'ON' afore starting. Big ends aren't cheap! Thankfully I never suffered!

My regards, Bill.
