fork leaking (srx)
« on: April 06, 2009, 09:17:39 PM »
left fork on my srx leaks off and on ..usually after harsh braking or whyen carrying a pillion or going over speed bumps....so im presuming forks are bottoming out, would this cause the fprk opil to seep through the seals...Any ideas how i can cure this is it just a case of replacing the seal or do i need to upgrade springs etc....many thanks

Looks like new seals to me. Replace both at the same time and make sure the chrome is not pitted or it will wreck the new seals. I managed in my incompetence to change both seals in less than 3 hours start to finish. The worsed part was getting the the nut undone inside the fork tubes, I used the broom handle ramed into the down tube and a vice.
That last sentence sounds like it belongs on a different type of forum.

yeah, that is a bu55er, i made up a long extension with a filed down bolt head welded on the end...(if you want the size i'll measure it for you), then with the caliper brackets in the vice (using a couple of alloy face plates on the jaws) it is a fairly easy job to undo with an allen key in the bottom and the adaptor tool down inside, if its been there for a while, can be bluddy tight.
Also, the seals i've been getting of late....are cr&p......depending on the miles you do, probably last a year.....i'd like to know where to get gooduns from....not sure if Yamaha can supply them any more?
my rule of thumb, is refill with 10 or 15 grade fork oil, to 125mm from top (with springs in, and fully extended)

Could the quantity of fork oil have anything to do with it? I think it sounds like sagging springs...

thanks for the help...i replaced both fork seals less than a year ago.. thats why i wondered if it is them or the fork springs....i used 10wt oil and filled the forklegs according to the amounts shown in the srx6 manual (cant seem to get hold of a srx4 manual anywhere) i guess i will replace the seals again but i will also check the springs.
