Tips on stubborn exhaust - Non thumper
« on: January 27, 2009, 09:09:13 AM »
Ive been trying to get the exhaust headers off an SV650. The stub nuts had all but disintegrated, so I ground them back then spilt them, remarkably the threads are still good. But the header will not come away from the head.  Ive spent the last couple of evenings heating it up with a blowtorch and spraying on penetrating fluid, then belting it with a rawhide mallet. No joy.
Apart from cutting it off (tempting) any ideas how I can get some movement into it, or do i just presevere with heat/penetrating fluid ?

Why not fire it up! The alloy will expand more than the steel and should losen. Just a thought. ::)
If I'm not working I'll be away on my bike camping!

when you run the motor you can keep the header cool with a hosepipe/watering to help things along.

no such problems on my CBR. one stiff breeze should turn my headers to dust.

This might be useful to you, the mrs' bike had similar problems. solved by inverting the motor and soaking in penetrating oil (just engine in frame on abba stand) a length of wood between the pipe and the cylinder may also work.

Unfortunately mine looks a bit like the bike in the pictures.

Managed to get it loose eventually, repeated heat then penetrating fluid over a couple of days then the application of Mr rawhide mallet has loosened it up.

Dont suppose you have a tool for removing the locknut from the swingarm I could borrow for a week or so. I can get one off Ebay but £24 is pricey bearing in mind I'm ony going to use it once.

You could try to cut the pipe and fold what is left in on its self so reducing the size. Or carefully cut a slot with a jig saw into the head.

Sorry i haven't got back to you sooner. I don't have the tool personally but the ones i made up for a mate of mine was made from cut up sockets, using a dremel. bit of a pain but at least you can use the to torque nuts up properly. the (use longer deep sockets) socket sizes are 27,22,16 & 14mm. with these all nuts can be delt with. hope this helps.
