Thanks Bill, lovely isn't it? I have seen it before and the Velocette V-twin called a Vulcan, both really nice home-made specials.

I once met a man who raced Leaping Lena which was a Panther sidecar outfit, but sadly I can't remember a lot of what we talked about. I do seem to recall it was known as 'leaping' Lena due to it's inability to keep the front wheel on the track! Good old thumper torque.

Bet the owner can  “STRUT” his stuff when out on it.

It didn't come out of the factory like that Micheal, Panther only did singles (apart from a dodgy 2 stroke if memory serves). It was built by the owner a Mr Stray, like the Velo V twin Vulvcan - that was by a different builder.

My attempts look feeble in the extreme lined up against these!

They never did, it's a Millyard type special, with others getting in on the act!

I suspect his bottom end carburation glitch 'll be due to the front AMAL MKI getting cooked by the heat from the front pot and the twin exhausts of the rear pot passing either side. I'll dream on, or go and buy a lathe and mill!

The Vulcan and, I believe the Panther twin predate Allen Millyard by several years - I think I remember reading about the former in Motorcycle Sport back in the 1980s when Allen would have been but a lad.

As well as the Panther and Vulcan, which do both pre-date Millyard, there was a bloke in Australia I believe who made BSA V twins. I know BSA made their own V twins, but this bloke used B33 top ends and sprung frames. And let us not forget the tale of Phil Vincent supposedly putting the drawings for two Vincent singles one on top of the other and realising that he could make a V twin.

In total opposition to those specials Buell used to make a bike which was a Sportster with the rear cylinder removed to make a single! I think it was called a Bolt or a Blast or something like that and I have actually seen one at an HD rally and no it made no sense whatsoever.
