Title: XT250 - first steps
Post by: manxie on October 21, 2018, 05:20:57 PM
I bought this little XT250 about 12 - 18 months ago, but due to personal commitments it has just been sat in my garage waiting for attention.

Well, a good friend of mine has offered to "do it up" for me, and he came to collect it yesterday. I`ve never had it running so what ever it`ll need, it`ll get. What a lovely little thing it is and can`t wait to ride it around one day and even get a few green lanes done on it.

I know I`ve not been on here for a while but I just wanted to share my story. Cheers  ;) 8)

Evening Steve, good to have you back on the keyboard 👍... looks like a cracking little project, I used to lust after one of them when I was a younger fella. Big bro (propeller) has a very interesting story about one and about the poor young squaddie that was riding it at the time 😥😥
Cheers, Michael

Hi Michael, thanks for your welcome. My mate who is working on it for me, owned one in about 1985?? and I loved his back then. I`m really looking forward to getting it done but now I`m 35ish yrs older and about 8st heavier, maybe it wont be as much fun as it should be  ???  ;D ;D

Looks a nice one Steve - like a mini XT500. I missed out on one years back. Usual story, I should have told the owner I was genuinely interested and it ended up getting sold for £150! There's a book called "Exploring green roads and lanes of Great Britain" - it still turns up quite cheaply on Amazon or Ebay and well worth picking up. The author Ian Thompson owned an XT250 and used it to off-road extensively in Britain and Europe.

Regards

Tony

Cheers Tony. We have a few green lanes over here to try out when it`s done but I`ll keep an eye out for the book you mention. Cheers, Steve.

I rode 15000 miles a year on one for 4 or 5 years. On road ,off road , commuting etc. 6v headlight was always the main issue but with a good bulb and a cibie lens ( which I may still have) it was nearly OK.
So many good times were had. Shane, XL250R, and I relentlessly slipstreaming each other and in the end had to pull in as I couldn't see from laughing so much.
Took the footrests off the swinging arm and welded on loops to the frame. Only sold it a few years back to a guy who wrote a homemade manual/ journal that I dug out last night. You can have the manual  if you wish. PM me your address.

PM sent Min. (sorry for the delay)

The little XT has been running and ridden around some fields to check gearbox / clutch and all seems good. Further strip down has commenced.

They all do Steve!  ;)

Not much change out of £300 for the paint job alone, I bet!

Steady away, I have had a mental blockage with the Duke, but think that I have cleared that now. Whether it gets fired up soon is still in the balance. All the best.

Good health, Bill

Hi Bill,

no change from £300 I`m afraid, it was more  ???Then the frame, swing arm, pegs, bracketry etc painted. Wheels cost me more than my little Z250C cost  :-\

Ah well, hopefully it`ll be done in a couple of months, just in time for winter when the better weather arrives  ;D

Go steady,

Steve  ;)

I'm sure it'll all be worth it Steve, when you finally get that moment when you stand back for the first time and stand and stare at it for what feels like an hour. Probably about 10 minutes in reality but hey you'll think. "Boy what a sweet lovely little bike" 👍   Cheers, Michael

Aye Steve,

I am no surprised at all at your costs. Many people are now £45-00 per hour for their services and whilst that may seem expensive, the main Land Rover, BMW, Audi, VW and other car franchises are now charging £120-00 per hour plus VAT. Unless you find a mechanicaly sound, oily rag re-commissioning machine, a total cost of the refurbishment at the thick end of £1000 is likely. Sometimes they make a new bike appear 'cheap'!

Happy spannering!  ;)

My regards, Bill

Sadly not much has happened recently.  :( but it is going back together slowly. It`s on it`s wheels, paint done, new seat cover arrived last week. Wont be ready for the Manx like I was hoping but hey ho. I`m going to have to get the old MZ tested soon, as nothing on the road at the moment. Thanks for asking Michael.

"XT250 - first steps" was posted just over a year ago. After a load of hard work by my mate, and lots of sleepless nights hunting for some genuine missing parts, a shed load of ££££  :( it`s now 99% done.  ;D

After the hassle and expense of this restoration, and a massive thanks to my mate for all his hard work helping me out, I swore I`d never do another.  :-\ He then tells me he has a 1968 Kawasaki 175 F3 Bushwhacker project for sale  :-\ :-\

Similar Bill. Nice little machine of you`re friends. 10 speed? I suppose the Bushwhacker I`ve got is an 8 speed? (two rear sprockets)

It should look something like this when done?
