Do you like the colour?
NOT held together with string yet!!
Ian :)

Very nice. ;)
Always amazes me how different parts are once cleaned up and repainted. I mean, its the same frame, doing the same job (or going too) as the old, scratched and battered one, but looks a world different.
-
No, I prefer traditionally-coloured brown string rather than this new-fangled blue nylon stuff.
Frame looks nice though

Hello Ian
Frame looks good. Do you recommend Powder Coatings, Birmingham? I have a frame and swinging arm that needs coating gloss black and £70 seems reasonable. I've looked at their web site and they seem competent enough but a personal recommendation would be appreciated.
Cheers
Boyd

Hello Boyd,
I have used Powder Coatings for the last 5 or so bikes that I have restored fully. I find Steve there very helpful and knowledgable. I took my frame on Tuesday morning and he told me it would be ready on Friday morning. He actually phoned me up the next day to tell me it was ready.
Both bike frames in this pic were done by them
(http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z24/ian650/DSCN4320.jpg)
Hope this helps. By the way mine cost £81 incl vat because the SRX frame is in 3 parts but I also had the connecting piece and side stand done at same time (5 parts in total) The finish is very durable

Oooops..last post was done on my sons PC and he was still logged on...sorry for any confusion caused (I know its easy to confuse you lot)
Ian

I'm glad you brought up a recommendation for frame painting, it's exactly what my brother was asking me about earlier today. He wants to get his new (old) DR650 frame stoved and we neither of us knew of a decent company to use.

It is the living room - where else do you rebuild...
Mind your garage was tidier and less cluttered thn the living room last time I was round - GC, two boys, Mrs GC must be the Virgin Mary's Little Sister....
Mind Mrs Rog is her big sister.

Due to no response to my request for left footrest, I decided to "restore" the rear sets to see how they looked/felt. Here are a few photos of the new bits I have done so far and also included a few "old" parts. As you can see I still have a few bits to repair/make but I think, once all polished up they wont look bad. Im having to do a bit of manipulation with the right hand one as the pin for the brake pedal is welded to the frame, and I didnt want to burn my bridges and saw it off, so I m having to modify the pedal angle to miss the original pivot pin. Im sure SRXers will understand what Im trying to say but for others I will assemble and take photos for those interested. I will have to do it next week now as Im off to (really chilly) Hamburg on Thursday with work till next Tuesday.
Ian :)

Aye ian,
Modification of the brake pedal understood! ;D
My regards, Bill.

Speedo and Tacho now rebuilt with shiny new black powder coated brackets and housings ;D
Im sure someone will disapprove as these are not "originals" for the SRX (actually donated by a workmate from an XS250..I find them quite attractive especially as they were a "gift")
PS Bracket was shortened to bring the instruments closer together. Also had a load of nuts bolts brackets etc replated today by Parkfield Electroplaters in Wolverhampton. Dropped a tin full of parts off at midday(unannounced) and collected them at 3:30pm .....now thats service for you!! Back wheel now in place as well ;D

If they work, dont look daft and are cheap then why not. The SRX tacho is quite small so I can see some advantages to having a full size one.

As promised a few more photos. I seem to be taking one step forward and three back lately. (Whats new in life?) I had to remove the airbox to enlarge the available space to take a big enough battery to cope with the electric starter. Resulting in removing all the back end etc etc. Then I had problems with the left hand switch and had to remove that. I have now taken off the wiring harness to check and double check that I have altered everything correctly. Phewww. This has meant quite a few late night workings in the Reece garage. Ah well....I went for a blast on the Bonneville this morning just get it all out of my system and felt a lot better this afternoon. Im still hoping for an early April finish although it probably doesnt look like it on paper.

Just a bit of an update now the pressure of Stafford is off! It doesnt look like much progress has been made but I have been pretty busy. I will take another photo of offside tomorrow in daylight if I get the chance. As you can see the battery is a bit of a squeeze in there (same size as a Bandit battery YTX-9BS 8Ah) Fitted the braided hoses to front and back master cylinders, but I need to do some work on the real caliper (usual fault, one of the bleed nipples has "dropped off". I dont know if Im going to fit a headlamp in their either..it looks a bit full. The ( slightly modified) exhaust has also been fitted but I need to make some new stainless manifold nuts as I have somehow lost one of the original ones.
I have been informed today that my paintwork is now ready so I will pick it up on Friday and post a pic or two of it. Im told its a nice metallic blue with gold tuning fork badge and a subtle lining. Hmm cant wait to see. I also picked up the last lot (hopefully) of plating today so I can now rebuild the carbs and get them fitted. I have the new oil and filter (fitted)...Im hoping for firing up next week sometime..I will keep you posted... I may even try and put a short video on here.
New Battery fitted:

Didnt get home in time to take pics in daylight so took them with flash. (Hope Im not exceeding my "limit" by posting all these pics ....I have tried to make them small ish without losing too much quality). The sharp eyed ones of you will notice lots of small jobs to do.
Pics pretty much self explanatory I hope, I have tried to keep "The Spirit of the Bike"

Here it is.."all shiny and new" . To be quite honest..Im gobsmacked at it :o I think its brilliant, but maybe not to everyones taste. All I have to do now is finish the rest of the bike off to the same standard. Hope you like.

Seat now fitted and looking good (and feeling comfortable!). Took the front mudguard off whilst I bled the front brake....why are Yamaha brakes such pigs to bleed? I ended up swapping the seals from another master cylinder to get it to work. I have now cleaned and reassembled the carbs, but Im sure they will need lots of adjustments and fiddling to get to work properly. I need an XT600E coil if anyone has one lying around that they dont need/ want. I had to make a longer bleed nipple for the rear caliper as I had to drill out and retap the thread in the caliper casting, trouble was I drilled just that wee bit too deep :-[ Just a few odds and sods to finish off now then I can book it in for MOT and hopefullly get some miles done on it. (End of tunnel in sight...or is that some bu66er bringing me more jobs to do!)

Hi Trevor, Im hopefully taking it for MOT this week if I get the required parts I have ordered. You can pop down anytime if you want and have a butchers.
Ian :)
-
Hi all,
you`ll be pleased to know (I hope!) that the SRX (special) passed its MOT today :) so there is no real need for me to carry on with this thread. I will post a final photo tomorrow of it in its finished state (although I have still got a few very minor tasks to complete on it- I still havent got a decent headlamp ring although this may be found at Stafford later this month). I would like to thank all of you who commented and helped in any small way towards my project. I did think at various stages that this wouldnt get completed but I think I surprised myself with my own determination at times. I hope everyone who sees the bike will like it and hopefully it may encourage others to either start one or even pick up the pieces on their own projects and finish them off. The list of people who helped is far too long to list but if anyone needs help with a similar project please get in touch. The folder I have on mine is bulging with drawings, sketches and odd bits of paper and phone numbers contacts and other miscellaneous information. I would like to single out (ouch!) Alan (SRX6) for special mention as I dont think I would have got started without his help. I will still be here on the forums adding my own humour but I will be hopefully doing a bit of riding this summer either on the SRX or the Bonnie so my postings will be fewer I think.
Thanks once again
Ian :)
