Title: Doesn't sound good...
Post by: Ian on July 06, 2022, 10:51:16 PM
Maybe it's my ageing ears.....but this sounds like a bag of the proverbial nails to me 🙉. As someone said in the comments, "Sounds like  a C15 trying to get out!"

Maybe it's  the same demo bike that was used by visordown at Goodwood?

Sounded alright for a 70 year old bike with a million miles on the clock. Hang on what's that? It's new! Oh dear.

Let's be kind and ask if the recording just picked it up badly and hope that's the case.

I think it is a shame they tried so hard to mimic the Goldie as it has achieved mythical status over the years, some would say deservedly (me for one) so they were always going to be on a hiding to nothing trying to do it justice. Maybe they would have been better calling it a B33?

you cant really tell from a short video clip, it may just be the sound on the camera.

John I have listened/watched 2 different videos. Both of them sound carp to me. But I will go and test ride one and do my own recording 😉

I listened to a Youtube interview with two of the execs from BSA talking about the new bike and I have to say I was impressed. Both talked about bikes and their own bikes and neither of them said product or units at any time. In fact one guy said he would be setting the price of the new bike and not the 'bean counters' which I liked.

I won't have the money to buy one, but it is nice to know that the people behind this are people who ride bikes and love bikes.

It’d have to be baffle out for me for sure. 🙉

That's interesting Michael as when the exec fella talked about the development of the bike he said they had made the baffle easy to remove. All singing the same song there.

It also sounds less clattery - drowning it out probably.....

dB killers always produce a sound like a flatulent cow on fresh grass! If they had designed a proper exhaust, rather than trying to mimic the Goldie exhaust they might have got somewhere.  :(

As for "Curb weight is 213 kilograms, or 469.5 pounds."!  :o :o :o :o :o

".... seat height is 780mm (30.7 inches), making it pretty accessible to shorter riders." "Pretty accessible....".  :-\ :-\ :-\  Does that mean that you look "pretty" sprawled in a loose graveled car park, or on uneven ground as you try to park or manouvre this machine? A bit like a GS1200 etc. of that ilk!

EU5 compliance, water cooling, steel mudguards, all conspire against it.

A well turned out B441 Victor, B50 would both be preferable to this "Gold Star" when it comes to weight and balance and a twin shock SRX 600 is positively silf like in comparison and putting out a similar bhp figure. My Duke 450MKIII being anorexic at 125kg or 275lbs, a seat height of 760mm or 30" and pushing out 35bhp with a soft cam and low compression ~9.0:1. Not forgetting the venerable SR500 either. At least they tend to retain their value at present?  ;D

With current fuel prices and running costs, keep it light, CofG low and in soft tune and you'll have more smiles per mile.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Good health, Bill

Hi Bill

I can't disagree with anything you have written, I certainly share your love of singles and British singles in particular, but for people not of our spannering persuasion I do sort of get it. I suppose RE have proved there is a great market out there for 'retro' singles without the pain of ownership that some of our preferred bikes can represent.

Either way you always speak sense and give me something to think about so thank you.

Personally I think it’ll sell in decent numbers given the (by today’s standard) low cost of one. I’m sure they’d be quite a nice ride, probably nothing to inspiring but “nice” all the same 🤷???... as you said in one of your previous posts Ian, if they hadn’t called it a gold star it might have even sold in bigger numbers. Gold star is a big name to live up to. Still when you look at the Enfield singles and now the twins, they sell in decent numbers, I think in part because of their low purchase price.
Cheers, Michael
