Title: SR250 Running problems again
Post by: TOAD on April 24, 2007, 09:25:50 AM
Engine cuts out when hot. Difficult to get into neutral when hot. Runs  lumpy at low speed but seems OK over 50mph. Whats up with my little thumper?

Hi Toad

You'll probebly need to post some more detailed descriptions of the problems to get good advice, but I'll have a go anyway.

Cutting out and lumpy running when hot could be a choke sticking on - if it has a cable operated one, did the cable get trapped or routed wrong when you put the tank back on?

Difficulty getting into neutral when hot - is the idling speed too high/so erratic you have to rev it when it's hot? If not the only other obvious thing I can think of that would make neutral selection different when hot could be oil thats well past it's service life. Other than that, a badly adjusted chain is possible, but generally not only when hot.

Assuming that this has only happened since you changed the tank over, other things to look for might be anything that was connected/disconected/moved when that was done - thinking vacuum line to the fuel tap, dirt blocking the fuel filters, carb with dirt in it blocking pilot jet, or possibly flooding if the float needle has some dirt in it.

Others will doubtless be along shortly with other, probably better ideas. Best of luck with it.

I would guess you have an air leak again causing it to overheat, does it smell hot ?.
As for the neutral problem, is the clutch dragging ?, if you stop the engine does it then go into neutral easily ?

The bike had a service about 500m ago.New oil and filter. New plug and battery at the same time. When the engine is hot but switched off it is still hard to get neutral and the gears are very harsh and clunky. But it starts and runs perfectly from cold???

Morning TOAD,

Sorry to read about the tale of woe.

Weak mixture, needs investigating. Spark plug colour? White and blistered!!!
Check the ignition timing.
Despite oil and filter change, is there enough oil in the engine and what sort of colour is it on the dipstick?

Hope this helps.

Bye, Bill

There isn't a dip stick, just a small window to view the oil level.
