Title: Bomber Command/East Kirkby weekend 12/13 May 2018
Post by: timbo on April 17, 2018, 11:53:36 AM
There appears to be a couple of nice campsites at Kirkby on Bain, which has a very nice pub called the Ebrington Arms. This is near Woodhall Spa.
Or the 13th century, Blue Bell Inn, at Tattershall Thorpe, next to Coningsby, also has nearby camping. Possibly the oldest pub in the county.
Also, the Coach and Horses, at Hemingby has its own camping on site.
And finally, the Durham Ox, at Thimbleby, has a camping field onsite.
I will make a few further enquires, as my prefferred option would be the Blue Bell Inn, but I will phone them to get more info.

Sounds good Tim. Strangely enough I was in the area last month with the Mrs. It's quite a difficult place to get to without doing loads of boring motorway, though we did find an A road route from the end of the A42 before it joins the M1...

Sounds too good to miss, so I won't. Anywhere is good for me Tim.

OK folks, here is an update.
So I have contacted the Coach and Horses at Hemingby in Lincs. This is a CAMRA listed pub in a Wolds village, with camping at £5 per night. There are no showers, but there is access to the toilets and sinks all night, so its cheap and cheerful.
I have a suggestion to make. Why don't we just stay on the Saturday, in other words, meet up at East Kirby on the Saturday morning for the day, and then leave the pub on the Sunday morning for the Bomber Command Ride-in, then home.
my reasons are purely selfish, in that I don't fancy a ride on really busy roads across the midlands on a Friday afternoon, but would prefer to ride over on the Saturday morning.
Cheers, Tim

Yep sounds like a plan to me too. I may still take half a day on the Friday and go up in the afternoon - after all someone should check that the beer in the pub is OK, shouldn't they? It's a hell of a job, but I'm willing to take one for the team.  ;)

It's a Batemans pub, and Batemans (a local family brewery of great vintage) brew some great ales... my favourite being XXXB, and at Christmas their Rosy Nosey.
Being a bit of a lightweight and decrepit old geezer, I'm going to call the pub later today to see if they do B&B, no mention of it on the internet, but worth a try. Also my little 'peapod' tent.... a super small 'bivvy' type, has sadly done it's last trip I think after son in law burned a bloody big hole in it during a windy weekend in Keilder forest.
so, yes, i'll be joining you on Sat/Sun, but not sure where i'll be staying the night. (if push comes to shove i'll commute, 'tis only 80 miles)

I will definitely join you all for the Bomber Command trip on the Sunday. I'm going to try and get for the camping Saturday night but I'm working Saturday until 4pm and technically on alarm call until midnight so I may have to be boringly tee total! :o

+1 on XXXB! also 'Dark Lord' is a good pint if they have it.....though it looks like I'll have to abstain. :( :(

Well folks this maybe a meeting I can get to on my bike [weather permitting] Approx 90+ Miles so not too far for an oldie like myself. I am happy to camp out on the Sat night [wherever] and a few gargles of some fine ale in the evening. Will there be anyone traveling from down south up the A1? Looking forward to meeting a few of you reprobates 8) 8) 8)

Yes, as per the details in my previous post above, its the Coach and Horses at Hemingby. I will phone the landlady nearer the time to give her an idea of numbers, but she already knows that a few of us will be turning up. Should be a good little meet up, and I am even more pleased its a Batemans pub. Great family brewery, with great beer and great pubs  :)

Can't do the Sunday as working but looking at coming up on the Friday and joining you all at East kirby on the Saturday before heading home .
Tim you can always crash at mine Thursday if you don't want to fight the commuter traffic .
Cheers Mark

Great, so what is the itinerary. Where are we meeting up on the Saturday and the time? As I am bringing my camping gear with me I much prefer to go straight to the Coach & Horses, then ride to the airfield on the Sunday. All this is weather permitting of course as I don't do camping in the rain or for that matter don't like riding bike much in the rain. :)

I'm intending to go up on the Friday, so I'll stick around at the campsite Saturday morning and wait for anybody who's intending to camp Saturday night. I'll either be on my Silver MZ Rotax, or blue Jawa. If there's any change of plan I'll post it on here.

If there are folk turning up early doors and setting up camp on the Saturday morning Tim, do you think it would be wise to offer the landlady an extra couple of quid as a sweetner?

East Kirby is definitely open that saturday, from 09:30 to 5:00. Entry is £8.50, and parking is free. I suggest we leave the Coach and Horses for 11:00 to allow anyone time who wants to pitch up on saturday morning. Then meet at East Kirby for 11:30 for those turning up there. Yes Pete, you are right, as its a bit cheeky putting a tent up early saturday morning so a couple of quid extra seems right. Sunday, we will pack up and head over to Bomber Command in Lincoln, and then disperse afterwards.
I hope these arrangements suit ok. I will head over friday afternoon, but thanks Mark for the offer.

I Have noted Bomber Command center on the 13th is a specific bike day and entrance in advance is £10 per bike. Can this be paid on arrival?

The bike ride in to Bomber Command looks like quite a big do. So I reckon if you definitely know you are going, book a ticket online as Trevor has done above, just to be on the safe side. Thats me booked. Go to IBCC website, and follow the link on the Events page  :)

Guzzi Steve, we are doing East Kirby on the Saturday, then Bomber Command bike event in Lincoln on the Sunday. with the option of friday and/or saturday night camping at Hemingby. I will phone the landlady of the Coach and Horses this evening just to let her know we are still coming. She doesnt need numbers, so just turn up whenever suits  :)

Had an excellent day at East Kirkby, well worth a visit. In fact one visit isn't enough to really take in everything on display, if you get a chance to go I thoroughly recommend it. It is impossible to understand the bravery of the people who flew and maintained these aircraft. Also the ordinary Belgian and French people who helped downed airmen escape back to England. Humbled is sometimes an over used word but how else can you feel when you learn that some of these people had a 1 in 2 chance of dying and still went up on missions!

All that and then I got to read My First Book of Mini Beasts to my 4 year old granddaughter, thanks Ruby you saved me a wet night of camping, hope those who camped were ok.

Tim, sadly the memorial flight over Lady Bower dam is Wednesday 16th and I will be away.

If anyone other than me is riding over to Bomber Command today, we are meeting with the overnight campers at the RAF Waddington viewing area on the A15. Postcode is LN5 9FG.

Not sure what time, but I'm going to aim to be there for about 10am. Hopefully catch up with some of you there.

Fantastic weekend, many thanks to all who attended and the great company enjoyed.

The weekend had lots af high points including the visit myself, Timbo and Oldtimer made to the Petworth Hotel (which was used as 617 squadrons officers mess)  just as they were preparing for the 75th anniversary dinner for the Damb Buster raid, with all the surviving members and Barnes Wallis's daughter wandering round the hotel in dinner jackets and bow ties as we three in all our mucky bike gear were inspecting all the fantastic memorabilia.

East Kirby was also fantastic and the Mosquito which is there and has been under restoration by one man for the last forty years was a rare privilege to see.

The ride in to the Bomber Command Centre and the fly past by the Lanc yesterday afternoon finished it all off to perfection. I also managed to find a completely Motorway free route home in the increasingly warm afternoon sunshine which was great too.

Hope everybody else had a safe and enjoyable ride home.  :)

Yes, very well put Smithy and Crazy Frog. A fantastic TC weekend, with a lot of highlights. I didn't leave the IBCC until after 3pm on the Sunday, and so was able to see Johnnie Johnston, the last Dambusters survivor, take the last post at the memorial spire. Very moving, I think I must have got something in my eye  ;)
None of us could remember who had suggested attending this great event, until Steve C arrived at the IBCC, so thanks Steve.
Over the weekend, people dipped in and out depending on their circumstances, but overall we had, Timbo, Crazy Frog, Old and Wornout, Smithy, Old Timer, Mart, TJ63, and Steve C.
The Coach and Horses turned out to be a great wee pub, with plenty of camping space, and in a good location. many pints of Batemans XB were consumed at £3 a pint, and the food was excellent value at £5.95 for steak and kidney pie, chips and peas for example. So that's one marked on the map for our next trip to Bomber County  :)

As the others have said , I had a great time and East Kirkby is well worth a visit if only to remind yourself of what are ancesters had to go through for are future .
Great little pub at Hemingby (well done Tim) and I can't remember the last time I paid £3 for a pint and very welcoming will definitely be using it when at Cadwell Park as it's just up the road .
Here's to the next TC jolly if I can get enough brownie points .
All the best Mark

I too had a great day out and it was good to be able to put a few faces to the names I know so well on the forum. Sounds like everything fell into place to you guys ( except the weather on Saturday!), as it all started before we knew about the big organised ride out to the IBCC or the 75Th anniversary.

Glad you all enjoyed yourselves.
