Title: XBR ignition key switch
Post by: mthee on March 30, 2018, 10:50:44 AM
Having googled, scratched my head and slept on it several times, I realise my lack of electrical knowledge means I'm in need of your help (again!) Can anyone tell me the maximum load that is switched by the ignition key? Many thanks.

Without a wiring diagram it's impossible to say - eg what are bat 1 and bat 2?

Sorry, tracing the wires, this is what I got;

Bat 1 is +ve feed off battery.
Bat 2 is Reg/Rectifier
PA is Side stand (this is off a diagram for GB500, which mine is not..! So not sure here)
IG is CDI
E is ground
TL1 is tailight
TL2 is Tacho and Speedo lights

Then it looks as though the full generator output goes through Bat1 - Bat2. Not a very sensible design as this could easily be 20 amps or so.......

You could rewire it to use a relay to switch that connection as the other connections (sidelights, CDI etc) will be quite low current.

Thanks. If it looks like poor design, maybe I've made a mistake in tracing the wires. I'll double check.

I see R/Bl going to the fuse box and becoming Bl before connecting the reg/rec?

So max load is 20A?

Yes, looks like that feeds the positive bus in the fusebox.

You could put a relay in there - with a direct fused battery feed to the fusebox (on the brown) cable with the switched contacts in in it, triggered by the red/black coming from the ignition switch.

Thanks for setting me straight on this, Ian.

Would you explain why this is a poor design for me? I'm trying to improve my knowledge of electrics.

You would normally not route a high current through a switch like an ignition switch as the contacts usually aren't very robust. It's fine for controlling a relay etc or indeed feeding the ignition.

Worth looking after, too, as I couldn't find a replacement for mine. I shall get the graphite powder out, make sure I service the contacts and then add your relay. Much appreciated!

Afternoon Matt, I think I've still got an xbr ignition switch in my stash somewhere, probably a tad worn from memory but if you want/need it let me know and it's yours for the price of the postage 👍
Cheers, Michael

Just away for the Easter weekend, back Monday evening Matt. I'll double check I've still got the switch upon my return and let you know 👍🔑

I'd like to try to clean mine up first, but it's great to know I can relax if it's not serviceable. Ta very much!

Is this thread written in Chinese? It may as well be for me, I`m clueless regarding wires and eletrickery .... I`ll just stick to pipes I think  :-\  Good to hear from you again Matt  :) :)

Cheers! Well, if I didn't know it before, I do now; this is where all the knowledge is 🤯
