As my bike hasn't turned a wheel since i put it in the garage at our new house on 23rd of December i decided to charge up the battery but i can't access it as the key doesn't turn fully in the lock so the seat can't be removed. They are never a good fit in my experience but is was working last time i used it which could have been several months ago now.Any ideas please on how to the seat off?

Aye xbally,
Soak the lock in PlusGas-A or a similar releasing oil, give it at least 24 hours to soak and the apply more and gently wiggle the key in the lock!
All the best, Bill

Had the same problem with an XBR a while back. I think I managed to slide a flat piece of metal, under seat between seat and tail piece, and engage with seat leaver. Bit heavy handed, but worked 😉
-
Thanks-i'll go find my tools and releasing fluid from the boxes of as yet unsorted boxes in the garage and report back.
-
Martin... if in doubt just get the grinder out😉😉😉😉
Ps ... I am joking. I would defo be trying Bill's suggestion first, best o luck 👍

No luck yet, found some WD40 and a long screwdriver but no joy.As the roads have dried out i took if for a 25 mile spin-it started on the electric fine.Reckon i might gain some access via the sidpanels.Checked the lock again after the ride but it's still not turning.Fiddling with the screwdriver and a torch refused to move the mechanism either-i've sprayed it again with the WD................

the actual lock spins in the tailpiece from age, get a coat hanger or similar put a hook on the end of it ,if you look over at the taillight between the light and tail piece you will see the a lock arm , hook on the coat hanger on and pull it toward you and it should open :o tommy

Thanks Tommy.

Try pushing down on the seat and turning the key, works on mine

I'm sure you'll get over it 😉

Yes I'm sure I will Tim, got over much worse. Gotta say tho it was one of those bikes that was hard to hand over. Still now got a couple o quid to inject into the tracker project (which is moving on, albeit quite slowly)
Cheers, Michael

Got a cheap exhaust for the RS off Fleabay but still no time to investigate the seat lock but all advice gratefully taken on board.
-
What's the exhaust Martin?.... a motad 2into1 or original Honda?
-
It's a home brewed 2 into one from the standard set up exiting on the left of the bike Michael!
-
Sounds quite nice, if it's be executed properly. Look forward to hopefully seeing some photos of the rebuild in the "projects" section at some point 👍👍🏍🏍
Cheers, Michael

Just wondered how you got on with the XBR seat lock Martin, did you manage to get it sorted and get the seat off??
Cheers, Michael

Sorry-weather too cold and we have electrical problems at the new bungalow so haven't had time to look further into this.On the plus side base is in for new workshop but tools are still buried in the garage!
-
Slowly, slowly catchy monkey.... I think the saying goes Martin. Having just received the keys to our new house/project I can totally understand where you're coming from. Absolute shed loadda work to do with it. Hopefully this tIme next year it'll have been worth the grief 😢😢🤘🤘
Cheers, Michael

Yes,thank you Micheal-good luck with your property venture. I start my temporary 3 day week with my old employers on Monday having completed my redundancy notice period with them today!
-
Cheers Martin, least I'm lucky enough that it's got a full double garage and I'm going to slightly extend it to hopefully pop a lathe and pillar drill in there. Best of luck with the semi retirement/3 day week... 👍👍
-
Is it going to be more than you had previously, Michael? Is that even possible?! :P
-
Afternoon Matt... yes it will in actual area be a touch bigger than before once finished but since my accident I've peared down my bike collection and my good lady wife is quite insistent that her car is going in the new garage as well as my bikes and bike bench etc. That's why I'm taking the opportunity to extend it a touch so I can defo get a lathe and pillar drill in there which is what I always intended to do with where we are now. Going to be a lot of work to do this year but hopefully this time next year I shud av a cracking workshop 😁😁🔧🔩🏍
Cheers, Michael

Cars in the garage?! I gave up wardrobe space in exchange for having our single garage for my bike 8)

I assume you have the seat hump removed off the seat? If you get someone to turn the key to the unlock position and yourself waddle the seat itself about, you will find it will release itself.

D'you know what i have so much going on in my life that i completely forgot about this little problem as i haven't needed to get the seat off!
-
Just had to come back to this problem as i need to charge the battery.(Thank God for the old fashioned kick starter and de-compressor!) No matter what i do i can't seem to shift it. There's a massive gap between the seat and tail piece into which i can insert a screw driver etc but i can't seem to dislodge the lock mechanism whatever i do. I'm sure there's a knack to it which i obviously haven't got and no amount of wiggling, pushing or pulling on the seat seems to make any difference. I don't want to break anything so i am being as careful as i can! Thanks to all posters for advice to date!
-
Success!!!!!!!!!!!!I have tried a bit harder now .It helps if you can actually see! Put the bike in sunlight and noticed there is a catch on the lock mechanism which you can easily release with the blade of a screwdriver between the seat and rear bodywork. Only taken me nearly all of this year to work this out with help on here doh!
-
As I said, I think back in February Martin. Slowly, slowly catchy monkey 😁😁😁. Least you've got it sorted. By the way, how's the ktm doing? You enjoying it? .... cheers, Michael
-
Yes indeed Michael cheers. I have put the KTM on SORN now but am using the XBR and RS250. (I need to change my profile on here but have forgotten my password!)Just got a lower seat for the KTM off Fleabay (£14 inc P+P) and i took it to a local car place who have got rid of the ridge at the back where i wanted to park my harris but couldn't. I think the 390 is similar?Cost me £85 but seems much better for me. Having had pretty much about 90% road type bikes i felt as though i was sitting on the tank in the off road style of riding.690 was running well when put away at the end of October and i'll be putting it back on road Feb or Jan.Any idea where you can get cheaper Motorex oil as it's ridiculously expensive from KTM dealers! Sorry to everyone if this has turned into a personal message! Is the V7 ok-still miss it!
-
Evening Martin, yes my apologies too, to everyone else for kindda making this a tad personal. Sorry I don't know anywhere that does the cheap oil, I just used duckhams in mine, the correct grade Obviously 😁😁🤞. The guzzi went great the few rides I've had on it, really enjoyed it, like you it's off the road over winter for a bit now. It's undergoing a couple of minor modifications, new stainless exhaust system, one off hand built, new rear mudguard/tail tidy, again one off hand built and renthal bars. That's it so far. I'll post some pics up when it's done. (if I'm allowed😁😁 tis a V twin after all)
Cheers, Michael
