Title: SRX600 standard exhaust downpipe/silencer connection?
Post by: g80cs on April 03, 2007, 02:58:02 PM
I am sure I am missing something obvious, but I can't get the exhaust on my 1986 SRX600 to seal properly at the join between the downpipes and twin tubes that go in to the silencer. I fit the cylindrical fibre/wire gaskets into the ends of the downpipes (which fit snugly) and there is then 3/4 inch of the silencer pipes that fits into the downtubes. They are stopped going any further into the downtubes by copper bands around the silencer pipes. I've tried stainless steel clamps around the join, but the fit is still loose. It seems like the 3/4 inch at the end of the silencer pipes, and before the copper bands, is just not enough to ensure a tight seal. Anyone have any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Thanks Rob

Rob, I use exaust cement on mine. It is not pretty but who is going to get underneath and look at it? Mart

My stock setup sounds a bit different to yours. On mine the downpipes fit inside the silencer, and there is a substantial clamp each side to tighten it. I reused all the seals etc numerous times with no leaks.

I've had good success with sealing exhausts (lots of different applications car and bike) using CRC Maniseal, but I'm not sure it's available in the UK. Second best, I've found, is cheapo silicone roofing/gutter sealant.

Hi Mart and Peter, I'm wondering if I've been given the wrong gaskets (cylindrical fibre/wire wool type). The exhaust is as in the picture, but the downtubes have copper rings welded on 3/4 inch from the ends, which stop them going farther into the silencer pipes. Thanks for tips about cement and clamps - I only use one per pipe, but will get another set.

In any case, I bought a stainless steel system (without silencer) from a breaker for £75 which I will be using as soon as I get through the MOT. I will be posting a photo of the system soon, which has SRX600 stamped on it, in case anyone recognises it, and can advise me on a suitable silencer or end can (anyone know where I can get a Supertrapp?) Thanks again, Rob

Hi Steve, on perusal of the exploded diagram you provided, I had a 'light-bulb' moment, and realised the copper bands 1 inch from the end of the downpipes might not be welded on as I thought. Lo and behold, they slid down the pip with a bit of persuasion from a hammer. God knows why someone put them there, but the pipes now fit snugly in to the fibre gaskets, and I now have a quiet(ish) system. Thanks very much for help from yourself and others. Rob
