Having sold number three (pics in the piccy section somewhere) to a mate who's a plumber, for what i estimated to be a bit less than half price (£500) in exchange for putting in my central heating (considering it probably costs £500 to get a plumber out on an emergency call to change a ball cock, i got a bloody good deal) It was time to look for number 4, found her on ebay, a tidy, albeit in bits SRX6 (of course). £300 and 300 miles later she arrived at my Sons house (the scheme is, we will get her on the road, and problem free in time for the trip to the Isle of Man.
well, not exactly a pig in a poke....but in the cold light of the next day it was apparent that there was a lot needed doing
and expensive work at that. firstly a rebore, out to maximum 98mm (only piston we could get in a rush) so that was £130 to start with, removed the oil pump (you just HAVE to do this on the srx, it's such a crappy device, and any failings in that department will cause a new bore/piston to nip up quicker than your bum at the sight of a diesel spill). Yes it was buggered, another £100 into the black hole....add to that the best part of £200 for new tyres and wheel bearings/seals and it's all starting to get out of hand.....AND its still a pile of bits on the garage floor....son wants to spray the frame so looking for a match to the rather drab yamaha metallic grey. I have matched the metallic blue of the tank and sundry bits, so hace tarted up those a bit. Still to buy.....chain sprocket set, oil, plug, oil filter, and a host of nuts and bolts that seem to be missing.
get rearsets modified to fit.....set of stainless brake pipes, new pads......hell! thats enough for now.....more later

bluddy forks arn't straight! where will it all end??
In a divorce?!?!
Keep going mate, all will be well eventually. I have a couple of SRX stantions kicking about the garage if you want. I took them off for the reason of not *brilliant* chrome, but maybe you can sort em cheap??
Yours if you like, can post em up?

you're a hero Andy, but....the guys at Denver Motorcycles reckon they a perfectly serviceable even though they have a slight wobble, so we'll make do for now, and get'em reground/chromed in the winter....but thanks for the offer mate...real generous

If they are only slightly bent and both roughly the same, what I've done in the past is turned them in the yokes so they are splayed outwards. When you tighten the spindle it pulls them straightish. As long as they don't stick it works quite well.
-
Or point them backwards/forwards and adjust rake and trail...
Have tried to put slightly bent stanchions in facing either back or front as then the slider will run with out added pressure on any of the bearing surfaces, ditto seals etc.
Guess it is pay your money and take your choice

I once bent a set [into a back of a car] Local shop straightened them, D and R in Hereford actually. They said as long as it wasn't too bent [ie kinked] it was an easy simple job. They were about 15 degrees out, extremely noticeable.

Proper way - I believe is with a hydraulic ram and V stands. The student way was to jam them in a drain or the like, slot over a length of scaffold - or similar, and PUUUUULLLLLLLL - got them a lot straighter.

Funny isn't it, there was a time when getting your forks straightened was fairly routine. Apparently the problem with modern bikes is that as although the diameter of the tubes increased, the walls of the tubes got thinner, therefore in a bash the legs nearly always crease.
XBR fork legs are waaay tougher than that though, I once hit a car hard enough to have the bike go ten feet back in the direction I'd been coming from. Those fork legs are currently fitted to my sidecar outfit.
Cheers

Ahh that is how you adjust the stanchions for leading link conversion then.
Friend has a Commando Fastback with a small fairing - T-Boned a car when the car jumped a red light (in front of a copper no less) Pinhead went over the car. Car (escort) was written off and the Commando fairing had a crack in it - did not damage the scaffold pipe forks.
But yup modern legs are fatter but thinner skinned - and have funny coatings too I think.

weekly update :-)
I Knew it'd be a problem giving this project to #1 Son.....
I mean.....he's an engineer ... a proper one... you know.... had training and stuff.... in fact.. he's now an instructor at the CITB... and this means...
Every little bit of this bike has been stripped cleaned (and if possible, polished!) anything that is remotely worn/damaged/unsightly has been reported to me as needing replacing !! had I just gone along with it, and purchased everything he's demanded the cost would be staggering, as it is, after considerable debate over each and every item, raiding my hoard of spares, and making a few parts up myself, the cost so far is probably £500 on top of the £300 purchase price...and still to come.... rearsets....and a set of stainless hoses.... indicators...mirrors probably another £100.
I know what his game is.... wants this bike (now officially #4) to outshine my #1.... b*astard!
All this because he won't take his beloved Morini 3 1/2 Sport to the Island, well, by the time he's finished #4 it wouldn't suprise me if he took the same attitude about this bike....'too lovely and shiny and pretty to take out on those horrible dirty roads' !
Anyway.....the aim is....to get it MOT'd and on the road by 1st of May....here's hoping.... bit optimistic i think

optimistic indeed!!......still in bits.....spent 2 hours round Sons place last night doing the electrics, amazingly most of it seems to work, problem with the indicators, definitely a faulty flasher, and maybe a fault in the switch too.
Engine is ready to go in tonight, wheels and brakes and swingarm all assembled and looking pretty, MOT is booked for Friday
Still waiting for stainless brake pipes etc, and rear-sets (still on my workbench requiring welding and suchlike)
I have to say....the standard of #1 Sons preparation/rebuild work is outstanding......#4 is really going to be a silk purse from a bag of pooh
-
Does he want to take up residence in my shed? He can make a whole travel set of silk purses out there...

Don't think his missus will allow it, when he did the morini a few years back, he dragged something into the living room to polish every day over the winter! he was told...never again!, since then he's moved, and built a very nice workshop/garage, built in hoist, airlines the lot, so he's been banished to the garage most nights for the last 2 months!, and still getting earache!.....but I think the finished product will be worth it
-
Evening Steve,
Seems I'm a very lucky man.
Kat enjoys assisting in the garage, even have the meals whilst sitting in the comfy chairs next to the stove, rather than eat in the house!
Any views about tappet clearances? I intend to go ahead with the 0.10mm (0.004") which appears to be universal for all the later 'unit' Heron head engines.
All the best for Friday.
Regards, Bill

bu55er Bill, sorry, i should have asked tonight......will remember tomorrow evening.
#4 coming on a bit better now, electrics all sorted and tidied up, nice shiny engine fitted, lots of ancilliaries fitted too,
rear-sets will be finished tomorrow evening , and i'm collecting a full set of braided hoses + fittings tomorrow ( straight swop for a set of standard srx shocks)
so, wednesday evening will be allocated to the standard 3 hours bleedin bleedin, thursday start her up, friday MOT
well, thats the plan......
-
Saw a suggestion on bleeding brakes - if you have the front end off - stand it upside down overnight and all the air bubbles will rise to the top - ie bottom. Putting up the right way next day and bleeding - the now big air bubble will float up to the now uppermost bleed nipple.
Sounds a fag but if the front end was off....
Should have told you earlier....
R

Aye Steve,
I hope all goes well with the rebuild.
Wee tip for brake bleeding is to use a 500ml 'horse' syringe from the local vetniry and a soft rubber hose onto the bleed nipple to apply a vacuum and back bleed the system. The Child slavery principal or helpful wife [as described elsewhere on this site] is very useful under these circumstances for maintaining fluid levels in the resevoir.
Do you think #1 would take to the former label?
Cheers, Bill

Spent all last night farting about with these bluddy rear-sets, even using mine as patterns wasn't such a good idea, mounting holes on #4 frame (a uk bike) 2mm different to my #1 frame (grey import) ,bu55er!!! ended up welding up two holes and re-drilling, on the plus side I got the braided hoses and various other bits and bobs, but! my banjo bolt brake light switch is the wrong thread!!! 1.0 instead of 1.25, gawd and bennet...it's these little things that take the time...friday MOT looking a bit iffy now....but we'll soldier on...
-
Steve, out of interest which holes are different between the Grey and UK bikes ?
-
Steve...the 2 bolt holes for the original footrests....they appear to be different left and right on each bike and left on the uk bike is different to left on the grey import as is the right too. Only a mm or so.....a few swipes with the round file
-
Well, #4 is alive and well, looking sweet, MOT'd, taxed and insured (2n'd bike on my policy , AND THEY DIDN'T CHARGE ME ANYTHING!!), no leaks..though Son is worried about a noise that he thinks is the camshaft (see bike problems section),
the brakes were an absolute 5OD to bleed! considering we are using braided lines and run both up to the front master cylinder on a double banjo..... i ran over a litre of oil through before we had satisfactory pressure, finished half an hour before MOT due! the r e a r s e t s were a bu55er to fabricate, but worth the effort.... and just picked up a stainless chainguard from a mate ....looked so good, i got one for mine too.... i'll do a piccy and stick it on here....he'll do them for 40 quid, may be a bit less if a few are ordered. So, assuming Son gets it run in, in the next few weeks, we should have a good time riding up to the IOM for mad sunday....
