Does anybody have any experience of parting the halves of an SRX Mono or SZR 660 oil tank that they would be happy to part with, please? ???
I think that a quick flush with paraffin and then brake cleaner might not be sufficient to dislodge some of the c**p adhering in the internal crevices of the tank! ???
Having found some very nasty, black magnetic sludge in the oil tank and then found the metal gauze filter half clogged with cloth fibres (woolly jumper rag? :o )! This filter is for the "BIG LUMPS" and not the paper filter elsewhere in the circuit. I am dithering over undoing all the 6mm allen bolts holding the tank together, to ensure that all traces of c**p are removed from the inside; but not knowing of any definitive manufacturers advice.
As there is no gasket between the mating surfaces of the tank halves, I suspect that a good sealant and a torquing to 10ft/lbs off all the bolts should sort the problem. ;)
Happy to post images and results, even if they are graphic, after our previous discussions about running engines that have been standing for a "wee while" and the potential for terminal coronary blockages. :(

how about getting it ultrasonically cleaned or else having it chemically dipped? ive had stuff dipped before now and it comes out looking like brand new.

if it`s off the bike would a pressure washer shift it ?

I'd just have a go at splitting it, it can't be all that difficult, unless of course the bolts are rung ;)

There are 4 leverage points on the two halves of the tank, but after removing all 14 cap screws, the halves were reluctant to move. There is chancing your arm and b****y daft! ;) These tanks, bare, are £280+, on back order, + VAT! :o
So, after blocking the lower oil pipe orifice and replacing the drain plug, the old roller bearings from the Bros head races (previous 'Little job') were popped in and ½ pint paraffin was sloshed about for a wee while. Removed the plug and bung and the 'Torry Canyon' flowed out! :( Another 2 applications of this treatment and things were running clearer, but not clean. :( So, slaughterhouse degreaser and paraffin mix, with bearings went in, followed by boiling water and more agitation, this appeared to have the desired effect and there were less 'black bits' this time. Now for the 'coup de grace', phosphoric/hydrochloric acid solution on its own, with agitation, without bearings for two minutes, by which time the chemical reaction was warming the castings! ;) Full PPC including a face mask for this job. Then a flush with a jet of running water from the garden hose via the dipstick hole. This has purged all the c**p and left the internals cleaner than the outside. A gentle heat on the hot plate to dry out all the water, followed after cooling, with a final swill around with brake cleaner and its ready to go!
Trouble is; there is movement in the bowels of the motor where movement shouldn't be! :( Single burst of expletives, then 'cest la vie', a wee conversation and I suspect a disemboweling later on today. Deep joy! :-X

Great job on the oil tank Bill. My understanding, is that hydocloric acid solution, often being available as brick cleaner, cleans out crap, and phosphoric acid, is the active ingrediant in a lot of rust treatments, and finishes the bare metal off :)

Bill, I have several spare tanks, so go on and have a go at splitting it... if the worst happens you can have one for twenty quid + postage

when i did the same with my triumph oil tank i filled it quarter full with parafin, blocked all the pipes, put in about 4 foot of brass chain and put the cap on, then i wrapped it in bubble wrap and cardboard, zip tied it to the blad inside the cement mixer and left it running for the afternoow whilst i went and did the shopping. cleared it out great, . ive done the same with petrol tanks that ive wanted to seal inside.

I know others whom have used the cement mixer to good effect, I haven't one handy at present but have used my neighbours Grey Fergie PTO mounted one on occasion. His face was a picture at the suggestion and more so when he saw the result! ;)
