So, as per this year, I plan to organise another meet up at this great campsite/pub in the heart of the Sperrin Mountains in Co Londonderry in 2016. At the moment I plan to do the same again, and run it over the same weekend as the Cookstown 100 Road Races, which will probably be the third weekend in April, though dates aren't out yet . However, I am open to suggestions ;)
Anyway, here's giving you all plenty of advance notice.
-
Book me in.
That will also coincide with my 60th birthday! :o
-
Should be good for that.
-
Hi Tim, Regards Shepherd's Rest 2016..... Just been looking around on-line, and see "Adventurebikeriders" dot com.. are having a rally there, Fri April 29th to Sun May 1st ....... Is that perilously close to the weekend you were thinking of....? Regards, Tony
-
Thanks Tony. I think we will be the weekend before. Still haven't organised anything yet.
-
Just found out that 2016 dates for Cookstown 100 are 29,30 April 2016, which is the same weekend as the Adenture Bike Riders weekend, so i'll have to have a think about what we will do :-\
-
The ABR crowd are OK. It just depends on how many will be going. Wouldn't be a problem with the two groups 'bonding' would it! :o
I've been to quite a few ABR meets and had a good time meeting new faces etc.
I'll have a look on the ABR site and get an idea of how many intend to go before anything else happens.
Steve
-
"I've been to quite a few ABR meets and had a good time meeting new faces etc."
What's wrong with the old faces?
-
I will contact Colin at the Shepherds Rest over the weekend and get a contact for whoever arranged the ABR do. Then I will contact them to see if we they are happy for us all to pitch in together. I called in on their do earlier this year, and I reckon there were only ten to fifteen, so we could dovetail the whole lot for 2016. Plus I will be inviting the Irish RE crowd as they want to come north for a do :)
-
Hi folks. I have contacted the Shepherds Rest, and the ABR are booked in for the end of May, so somebody has got their wires crossed. I can confirm now that the Thumper Club is booked in for Fri 29 April to Sun 1 May, which is the same weekend as the Cookstown 100 road races. So get your time off from the boss, and get your ferries booked. (for ferries use Nutt Travel, 02870351199 for the best deal) ;)
-
" So get your time off from the boss"
Don't have a boss; I'll ask my carer
-
So, folks, this do is def on. The ABR boyos may he there as well, the more the merrier :) Also the DR forum are joining in courtesy of Dave :) Also the RE crowd are coming as its in their magazine, though not an official REOC event :) Also the MT riders will hopefully turn up, as a few came last year with Mark :) And there is also a chance that the Irish Sidecar fraternity will be there, as they have to move their date from early April :) Not forgetting the Mid Ulster Bikers /Guzzis :)
I reckon we're all cut from the same cloth, so happy days ;)
-
And carers/bosses are more than welcome :o
-
Tempted to head to this after the Cookstown, bikes, tents and sherbets... sounds good to me 8)
-
Yes mate, come up Fri, then watch racing all day sat or go on a run, then night in the pub with a full sit down meal for not much sheckles ;)
-
Cliff(bratxt) and Oz are also up for this, especially when I said SteveD was buying the drinks all weekend to mark his 60th, Tim, Cliff also likes cider. ;)
I had to assure them that Ronnie wouldn't be there. :)
Mark

WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o
You lot are supposed to buy me the booze that weekend!
-
Hey Tim. Oz & I are defo up for Shepherds Rest. I have managed to tempt the great Oz outta his hermit hole! I was all up for booking the ferry but Mark told me to hold my horses til nearer the time. So Steve don't worry, there is no way you will be buying the drinks on your 60th, you can expect a few beers from me. Not sure if you will get much birthday liquid refreshment out of Oz and the other tight arse gits! Anyway, ramblings need to stop and it just remains for me to wish everybody I know in the Thumper Club a very Merry Christmas and a Healthy & Prosperous New Year. Peace to All. Cliff (BradXT).
-
Excellent! It'll be great to see you :)

It's a Welsh tradition and you've been adopted(just for the weekend) ;)
-
I'm up for this one !
Hopefully next year will be a little less hectic for me.
And as SteveD is buying the drinks I def wanna go ;-)
Jethro
-
Nice one Jethro, as I know you've had things tight the last couple of years. Just hope we're not up to Storm Zebidee by then :-\
Just a point of interest, on the Sunday, 1st May there is a mass ride out of the NACC, who are hoping to ride over 100 miles around Lough Neagh on their tiddlers. Might be worth going for a look :)
-
Pat & I will be amongst them......on our tiddlers.
Dave.
-
Howdy all and a Happy New Year.
Now this is important.
Last year a few of us met at Llanfairfechan, to use the bunkhouse, on the Thursday Evening, before we got the Friday morning Ferry across to Ireland.
Sam from Platts Farm (the bunkhouse) has been in touch with me advising that there are others interested in booking the bunkhouse at pretty much the same time, but will give us preference.
I know it's early, but can I get some indication of numbers who might want to stay on the Thursday evening at the bunkhouse as we did last year in order for me to make some arrangement.
Cheers Steve.
If anyone reading this is interested can you get back to me ASAP.
-
Anybody out there still reading this forum?????????????????????????????? :o
-
Anybody out there still reading this forum?????????????????????????????? :o
Steve, not sure on how I'm doing it yet.
Mark
-
I suppose there is always room to camp at Platte Farm anyway :-\
I have been in touch with Alex, the guy organising the ABR forum meet at the Shepherds Rest, the same weekend as us, and he's totally sound about us all pitching in together, though they will probably do there own thing on the saturday :)
-
Hi Timbo, did you mention to him that we have in the past used Slims on the Sunday morning for breakfast?
He has posted that he has not arranged any facility for brekkie on the Sunday so far. May be worth a nod.
Just sayin.
Steve
-
Hi Steve
I was thinking of Fishguard - Rosslare for the trip as it's the closest option. But all things are possible ! I'll check with Cliff and any others to see what's happening.
Cheers and Happy New Year.
OZ
-
Hi OZ, just to let you know, Rosslare up to Dublin and round the M50 ring road is a very boring run if you just need to get north quick on the main roads. I prefer a spin up through Wales if I'm coming from south wales, however, you've maybe ridden those roads too many times :-\
And yes, Steve, I will definitely mention Slims cafe to Alex again, as he wasn't familiar with it.
-
I will get in touch with Platts Farm and inform them that so far myself and Rick will want to stay on the Thursday evening before catching the Friday morning ferry.
Dose anyone else need accommodation there?
Steve
-
Just a bit more info on the wknd. If any of you are staying on for a couple of days this might interest you. On the Sunday, the NACC will be attempting a circuit of Lough Neagh on their mini thumpers, approx 100 miles around the largest lake in the UK, so I will be meeting up with them for a nosey. Then on Monday I am taking the Wirral section to visit a couple of private bike collections in the local area, so obviously you are all welcome as well :)
-

If you like the smell of two stoke and can tolerate an average speed of 25mph ;D
-
I'll try my best to keep up :D
-
Hi guys. After the gathering I am planning to ride the Atlantic Coast Road south on my XT600 Tenere for a few days, before catching the ferry back from Rosslaire to Fishguard later in the week/the following weekend. Not sure if anybody fancies joining me, as it seems a good idea to make the most of me trip to the Emerald Isle. Cheers. Cliff (BradXT)
-
.........I'll try my best to keep up :D........
I thought you were leading!...we'll have to engage 1st gear and confiscate your gear lever. :) :) :)
-
I was thinking more like going in car with hazards on, to warn everyone of the crowd of buzzing wasps behind me ;)
Oz, that is a really good idea for people staying on. Its called the Wild Atlantic Way, and basically follows the whole western coast of Ireland. You could cross to north Antrim, then follow coast anti clockwise the whole way round. Then cut across to ferry from Rosslare. Would make a stonking trip :)
-
Hey Tim glad you agree it would be a great trip down the "Wild Atlantic Way" back to Rosslaire and the ferry. Will get the map out and start making some plans for the trip back home from the gathering at Shepherds Rest. Cheers Cliff
-
SteveD, I'll probably stop at Llanfairfechan on the Thursday night along with a couple of others just need to finalise with them.
Mark

Hi Steve. looking at the ferry crossing times from Fishguard and Timbo's comments I reckon it might be a better option going from Hollyhead on the Friday morning. Any idea if there is still space in the bunkhouse at Platts farm for Cliff and myself on the Thursday night?
-
Hi Oz. YES, there should be room for you two.
I'll start making a list and others can add there names. Room for 10 in the bunkhouse.

If you are needing accommodation, please add your name so we can keep tabs on numbers.
Cheers Steve
PS As mentioned I have been in touch with Platts Farm and booked the whole bunkhouse.

Hi Steve looks like the Great OZ has sorted me the dubious pleasure of spending the Thursday night in Platt's Farm bunkhouse with you noisy and smelly lot. Ah well can't win 'em all!
Have you sorted out what Ferry Company and time you plan leaving Holyhead for Ireland on the Friday morning, so I can look at booking my ferry ticket? Nice one Steve. Hope you have a good time at the Dragon. The Bard XT. (Cliff)

Hi Brad, I haven't booked yet but I will be using Nutt travel as per last year for the, I think 9 o clock ferry. i know its an early one but if we get up early in the morning it's about an hours ride to the ferry at Holyhead and then we have all day to get to the Shepherds Rest.
I will give Nutt traveol call in the morninmg and find out about crossing times and cost. Watch this place.
Steve
-
Nutt are doing 20% off the Dublin Holyhead ferries at the moment if you book by Tuesday 9th Feb. Number is 028 7035 1199. You may need to quote "show offer" as they were promoting this at the NI Motorcycle Festival this weekend. Stena have a general 20% off offer on but that only applies to Belfast Cairnryan.

Hi Steve,
I won't be with you on the Thursday night as my group is crossing earlier in the week.
See you at the weekend,
Mark
-
Hi Steve, I will not be needing a space in LLanfairfechan. My ticket was booked some time ago... My ferry crossing is a little more convenient for me. I shall be there on the Thursday, via the Cairnryan to Larne ferry... See you all there.... Regards, Tony
-
Yes, a few peeps are landing on Thursday, so I will get up there Thursday as well. If you can arrive in the afternoon we will head over to Cookstown early evening for the pre race classic run round the old circuit a couple of times. Not a big event, but there's always some interesting stuff ;)
-
Also I believe there's some practice and racing on Friday, so Thursday/Friday would be a good opportunity for a dander around the pits :)
-
Hey Steve, just wondering if you sorted any information regarding the ferry as per your last post? Cheers Cliff
-
SteveD,
Just a reminder that Pete Bond will be staying with you in Llanfairfechan on the Thursday night, I can't find the list to add him.
-
So have we a rough head count of whose coming over for the Shep Rest wknd? It want be long now, and the more the merrier ;)

Me, Mick, Brian, Keith, will be there Thursday and Cwmdu Pete will get there Friday.

Hi Tim
Cliff and me are going - waiting on Steve D to confirm his ferry crossing and will get it booked. Feels like Spring has sprung down here in West Wales - here's hoping for next month.
Cheers

I've booked Pete on Stenaline for 08.55 Fri 29th April, I guess that's the one you'll be taking.
-
Mark- if you'd like to book and pay for me and Cliff on the ferry as well that'd be nice !
Thanks for the info - I'll check it out and get it booked. Steve are you on Stena as well or Irish Ferries ?
OZ
-
So, I reckon there will be around forty of us altogether. Looking forward to it :)
-
I'm working all weekend to get some money together and I will organise a ticket middle to end of next week when I can pay.
I will book through Nutt Travel. I'll try today to see what the cost is.
Cheers Steve
-
Now that is dedication. You know its worth it ;)
-
i hope the bar has ordered enough guiness in ;)
-
And I'm sure the local Poker Tree ales will get a hammering too ;)
-
i hope the bar has ordered enough guiness in ;)
I hope they've sold out, Mick stinks on that stuff.

Hi there Steve D and those of you staying at Llanfairfechan at Platts Farm Bunkhouse on Thursday 29 April 2016, has any firm decision been made on the ferry crossing we are taking from Holyhead?? Would like to book the crossing sooner rather than later. Cheers guys. Cliff

-
Carer he say yeees, but he will have to accompany me to make sure I don't get lost

Yeah, will be calling Nutt travel tomorrow.
Steve
-
Brad if you are reading this I have today booked for the ferry crossing with Nutt travel (02870351199) Sharleen if you want to know!
I have booked for the Friday morning 29th/4 Holyhead - Dublin 08:45 Stena Line. Return Sunday 1st/5 15:10 Dublin - Holyhead.
Ref number that you can quote is 78578002 £105 for flexible ticket (you can alter sailing times)
Hope this is of assistance. Get yourself booked in and I'll make sure that we have accommodation at Llanfairfechan (Platts Farm)
Any problems mail me on this thread and I'll get back to you.
Cheers Steve
-
So anymore for Llanfairfechan?..................as Mark and his buddies are going earlier from South Wales.
I need numbers people.
Steve
-
Hi Steve, thanks for the info, much appreciated. Will now get the Ferry booked using Nutt Travel as you suggest. Look forward to seeing you at Llanfairfechan later this month. Cheers Cliff
-
Ferry booked. I went through Nutt travel as suggested. I don't get it - how is a travel agent cheaper than booking direct with Stenna ? Anyway I'll be coming on my TDM as I'm not able to sort the XT for the trip. With the luck I've had with my bikes recently the TDM will only be running on one cylinder when I get there - so still a thumper.
Happy Days.
-
Its a good question Oz. All I know is that anyone involved with motorcycles or any Motorsport use Nutt Travel, which is a very well respected local family business. It has to be because of the volume of sales with the ferry companies, they can strike good deals.
Billy Nutt, the boss, used to be the main man behind the NW200, the biggest spectator sporting event in Ireland, and his son Marty Nutt is a bike racer, so the family are engrained in our local bike scene ;)
-
Ferry booked via Nutt Travel. As I have mentioned previously after the gathering, I plan to head off down the Wild Atlantic Way for the rest of the week, with a view to sailing back via Rosslaire to Fishguard. Seems too good an opportunity to miss already being in the Emerald Isle and not having been over to Ireland for many years. So I am wondering if anybody fancies joining me for a few days heading south from the starting point in County Donegal? As Timbo says it is should be a great ride if the weather is reasonably kind. Cheers Cliff
-
So after last years Friday night "food from the chippy in Draperstown fiasco", as in, the food was sh***, we will have simple bar food on this year on the Friday night, at cheap money :) Food on the Saturday evening, will be, the usual excellent fare, as per usual :)
-
Hi Tim, I fancy watching some of the racing on Saturday - but with the roads closing from 10 till late does that mean you're there for the duration or can you catch a few hours and head on ?
-
No, you can get to the racing when roads close. There will be the option of going to the racing for the full day, or going on a run for a few hours, then watch in afternoon, or, stay out on a longer run for most of the day. So everyone is happy ;)
I will make sure I get a full race programme beforehand, so peeps can have a look at the schedule, though weather sometimes can cause them to change it.
-
Bleedin ell you're organised ! Thanks - looking forward to it all. Cheers
-
We aim to please ;)
So far we have:
SteveD, Calleyne, Mark, Mick, Brian, Kieth, Pete Bond, BradXT, Oz, Mart, Daniel, Timbo, Alison, Tony R, Pete B, Chris, Ronny?, Jonathan, Adrian, Cherry, Robin, Dec, Geordie, Karen. That's 24 so far.
Have I missed anyone out?
-
Not a bad line up, I hope the ? means Ronnie is not coming. ;D
-
;D I wondered would you notice that :D Plus the ABR lads, so probably around forty of us in total.
-
Not a bad line up, I hope the ? means Ronnie is not coming. ;D
[/quote You wish. :-*
-
Will you be on your new XBR Ron? The one with five carefully owners, including me, Tony, Jack, and now yourself three times :D
-
As you say Tim, this is the third time I've owned this particular bike. It must be about ten years since I first bought it. Flight over to Manchester, then the train down to Darwen near Blackburn. It was a small dealership selling second hand stuff only, can't remember the name. Anyway, took the long way home, up to Stranraer, then over on the ferry. Happy days.
Ron.
-
And now that you have it back again, you can have many more happy days ;)
-
As you say Tim, this is the third time I've owned this particular bike. It must be about ten years since I first bought it.
I'd love to hear the story on this, if you have the time. I mean, 3 times! Did you keep tabs on her throughout, or did chance play a part? Call me an old romantic, but seems like she was made for you and you'll have to give up selling her - unless you're making money each time?!
-
The bike in question, has basically, just been sold between the four of us, who all know each other, and are in the same bike club ;)
-
Hi Tim, you can add me and Dan to the list now. Coming over Thursday Holyhead Dublin 1150. Mart
-
Brilliant Marty. You're already on the list ;)
-
Brilliant Marty. You're already on the list ;)
Don't worry Tim, you'll be the same at his age. ;)
-
Anyway, took the long way home, up to Stranraer, then over on the ferry. Happy days.
Ron.
You got lost. ;D
-
The second word is "off".
To reply to an earlier post from Mthee, I'm starting to think maybe it is meant to be. Although I have also owned a Moto Guzzi V50 3 times as well. Same thing again, couple of mates chopping and changing. As for making money, the best I've ever done is break even on a bike. I'm afraid heart rules the head when it comes to bikes.
Ron.
-
It must be great to be so old you've got the opportunity of re-purchasing your previous bikes not only once but twice. ;)
-
So the answer to my question seems to be a big fat NO! Ah well.
-
It must be great to be so old you've got the opportunity of re-purchasing your previous bikes not only once but twice. ;)
What do you mean old? I've had less birthdays than you, plus I've kept my looks. ::)
Ron
-
So the answer to my question seems to be a big fat NO! Ah well.
Don't be so pessimistic. I'm working on having a few extra days tagged onto the weekend perhaps coming back Tuesday. Depends on funds and jobs. I was going to PM you nearly next week when I can be more firm with my plans. I know a really nice camp site at Sligo that I want t o go to again!
Steve
-
Gosh Steve I thought you would never ask. I am looking to head down the Atlantic coast route during the week after the meet, starting at the most northerly point in County Donegal and heading back home on the Rosslaire to Fishguard route. See what you think? Cheers Cliff
-
Well, just in from a lovely sunny spin round the Sperrins. So that's the bare bones of a ride out sorted ;)
Also called in with the bossman/host, Colin, who is ready for the onslaught.
There will also be a group of Scottish boys, called the Hillbillies staying that weekend, so there could be seventy of us altogether, and there is a car rally starting from the Shepherds Rest on the Saturday morning, though they aren't staying over.
-
Hillbillies! If I hear banjo playing I'm off.
Ron.
-
Flashbacks from your childhood? :D
-
Just highly strung.
Ron
-
;D ;D ;D
-
Well, according to the oracle, that is Country file, the winter is on its way back. So pack your winter woollies ;)
Why is it, that every time Mark comes over to Ireland, ie, tomorrow, Monday, the weather here turns to s###! Answers on a postcard, please, Ron ;)
-
Yes Tim, Countyfile forecast is spot on. A big depression is moving in.
Ron.
-
..........A big depression is moving in............
Well thanks for that....we're coming over on Wed on our tiddlers....riding around Ulster for a week....I'll pack my thermals and waterproofs.
Dave.
-
"Hillbillies! If I hear banjo playing I'm off.
Ron."
I'm going out to buy one now. Let's hope it works
-
Don't worry guys, we'll get the peat fire stoked up in the cottage, the fire will be lit in the pub, and the shower and toilets have underfloor heating, so dinny worry ;)
-
"Hillbillies! If I hear banjo playing I'm off.

I'm going out to buy one now. Let's hope it works
Worth a try. Looking forward to seeing your instrument.

Great weekend - thanks Tim !! Super friendly people, good food and drink, brilliant riding and campsite. Crazy weather though. To add to the rain, wind, snow, sleet, bright sunshine and hailstones I had seriously bad fog in North and Mid Wales on the way home.
Looking forward to going again.
-
Yes, a big thanks to everyone who made the effort to come to this far off and strange outpost of the UK ;)
Altogether we ended up 25 of us Thumper/RE, 25 of the Hillbillies/Stirling MCC from Scotland, and 30 ABR forum. Colin looked after us all great as usual which makes running the whole thing real easy for me. So I'm quite happy to do it all again. I might even let you ride some A and B class roads on the rideout next time!
I was also helping out with then Wirral Wobblers, which was like herding cats, while they were over. Catch them on BBC iPlayer, Newsline, 03/05/2016.
-
Heres a few pics from the weekend. Some reprobates outside The Central Bar, Cookstown, and one of the MTs and Robins rather nice RE Conti GT at Ballintoy Harbour.
-
........which was like herding cats.......
meeooowww.... nice to have met up again Tim, + the ones at the rope bridge and also at Joeys bar....we had a great time on the tiddlers, with the odd mishap, must come on a proper bike next time.
Dave.

Just got back home from the Shepherds Rest Thumper Meet at 2.00am this morning after catching the 9.15pm Saturday night ferry from Rosslare to Fishguard. After the gathering I headed up to Malin Head, Co Donegal the most northerly point in Ireland and then headed south following the "Wild Atlantic Way" route as far as practically possible. The weather was not very kind, which drove me onto the N roads at times and also to seek shelter in hostels for the night. Crossed the River Shannon by ferry having last done so on my Suzuki GT750 in 1978. Eventually made it down to Mizen Head, Co Cork, the most southerly point in South West Ireland a few days later, taking in sites of interest on the way. Has two fantastic days riding with superb weather following the coast road and mountain routes through Co Kerry & into Co Cork. However, the weather gods saved the best until last, with monsoon rains from Kinsale to Rosslare on the final leg. Total mileage door to door 1,600 miles on my trusty TDM850 which never missed a beat. I had actually planned to take my XT600 Tenere but because of a couple of niggles ended up on the TDM. So whilst being a little late back home a big big thank you to Tim and the Irish lads for organising the meet with great company, riding and food all sorted. Cheers guys. See you all soon. The Bard XT
-
Watch this space for next year. It won't be the bank holiday weekend, or the Cookstown, but a joint do with the Irish sidecar lads, in mid April. Another great bunch of people. Probably will coincide with the Tandragee 100, for anyone who needs a road racing fix ;)
-
Thanks Tim,
What a great weekend. Thanks for all your hard work.
Dan and I went to Malin head ont the Sunday and finished up camping by a beach on the Rosguill peninsular. Monday Glenveagh national park to the west coast. Camped at Inishcrone, next night a very nice hotel in Kinvarra. Shannon ferry and the flying boat museum, well worth the visit thanks for the recommendation. B&B in Killarney [great night out] garage parking for the bikes. Ring of Beara and the Healey pass, great views. then Mizen Head which was much better than the Cliffs of Moher. which were a bit underwhelming. then another excellent hotel in Cahir. Friday a quick blast up to a campsite just SW of Dublin. buses to the City Centre stop right out side the camp every hour so a night in the city. Temple bar rocks. Saturday got the ferry home. Sunday 5,000 bike "Ride for life" in aid of Midlands Air Ambulance.
All in all a great 10 days. Highlights, too many to count ,low points Cliffs of Moher.
Roll on next year.
Thanks again Tim, Mart
-
Excellent. Glad you enjoyed your trip. There are some lovely spots along the Cliffs of Moher, but unfortunately the public main bit is tourism gone mad/bad :-\
