Title: XBR 500: Check clutch plates with oil in tank
Post by: guest1703 on February 02, 2014, 05:02:59 PM
Hi all

Just want to know if it is possible to check the clutch springs and plates without emptying the oil?

Thanks a lot!

Best Dennis

Hi Dennis, this another newbie to the thumper club, but a very keen and older motorcyclist who has just re-commisioned a 1988 XBR 500 myself.

Sorry but the answer to you question is NO, you must drain the oil. Gets very messy otherwise. The problem is not getting the oil out, but re-filling the oil tank.
Whilst you got the plates and springs out, don't forget to remove and clean the oil strainer gauze in the very bottom of the crankcase.

Best of luck

Trevor

Will do a oil change while I am at it.

Can you not remove the battery and tank and then lay the bike on its side ?. It works for the SRX.
