Title: Engine number check

I'm looking to buy a second hand Honda engine but don't want to risk buying one that's been taken out of a stolen bike. I have seen one and taken a note of the engine number, I guess the fact that it has not been erased is a good sign! I'd still like to check though but can't see anywhere on line to check whether its ok or not. Any ideas out there?

I'm sure your local friendly constabulary would be able to tell you if the number matches a stolen item?
