I know this sounds really daft
Would I be correct in the assumption that you only check the oil level when warm i.e go for a ride, allow to cool for five mins then check.
Not from cold?
I only ask as, the old gal was good as gold before the oil change (not rattley cam chain)
changed oil, did all the necessary (top up, run, check stick and top up some more. aprox 2lt)
When warm oil level ok, when cold, oil level at bottom of stick
I did use correct oil 10/40 motul semi synthetic oil
also now the clutch slips a little

The oil tends to drain into the sump, so the procedure is to check it immediately after shutting down. Five minutes later it will seem low.

The semi -synthetic oil might also effect the clutch plates, read it somewhere not always a good idea,stick to what you know.

Probably far too late to reply to this one but, as I have been out of touch for ages, here goes.
After spending a fortune on Filtrate and Morris oils, I decided to chance a good quality, but much cheaper, semi synthetic oil. Works fine with no clutch slip at all. I don't thrash the bike at all, but do tend to "short shift", as the Americans call it, which would, I suspect, put pressure on the clutch.
This bike is a low mileage one, for me, at about 85,000 so don't know how long I will have no problems.
Hopefully as long as the bike lasts (at least another 50 or 60,000 on previous form).
