Title: Oval Rear Brake (XBR500)
Post by: guest1552 on April 19, 2013, 07:33:19 PM
Hi Ladies and Gents,
Hope someone can help with this one
My XBR500 has an oval rear brake drum (common fault I believe)
Does anyone know of a cheapish easy fix, I did try Hagon in Hainault, East London, but they dont deal with drums anymore.
Does anyone know of an engineering firm in East London/Essex area that could help, or have a wheel that has a round drum for sale?
Cheers Guys and Gals

The problem is usually caused by corrosion between the alloy wheel hub and the steel liner distorting the liner.  The bad news is that there isn't usually enough 'meat' on the steel liner to get it skimmed. Good rear wheels can be hard to find - plenty of wheels on Ebay but no guarantee they are actually good. Otherwise you might be able to get the old liner out, skim the hub very lightly to remove the corrosion and a new liner pressed in but that might be expensive.

You could try PM'ing Simmo on this forum as he often has XBR spares for sale but I don't know if he has any wheels.

Sorry for the bad news.  :(

One other thought.  Have you had the rear wheel out or loosened the axel recently? If so are the brake shoes properly centred? Mine has done this a couple of times and it can make the brake pulse through the pedal like an oval drum.

Loosen the axel nut so there is a bit of lateral movement in the wheel, spin the wheel by hand and then press the brake pedal hard.  Still holding the pedal down, tighten up the axel nut then adjust the brake if needed.  If you are lucky it might just cure it.

Not got one at present. Looking for another bike to break at present. Missed one on eBay recently, went for too much :)
Will keep looking

I had my xbr in a local bike shop for a road worthy cert or what you guy call an MOT. had him change out the rear shoes to pass for change of registration. Long story short, when I got the bill it stated that he had machined the drum. Will call the shop with a please explain on what he did and get back to you. Might save you some coin if he has a technique...

Hhhmmmm. He just dressed it up with a sandpaper flapper wheel. Guess you'll have to look for a wheel.
