Did the DR400 have the same lump as the GN400? I'm having trouble finding info no the net; all I can see is that they have the same swept volume and alleged hp but that the GN has 10mph better top speed.
Would I be correct to guess same lump, different gearing?

So far as I know, yes and a development from the SP370. I have a Cycle or similar rag somewhere with an article which I shall try and exhume.
Haven't forgotten about the wheels article Rog, one rummage failed. Another due this weekend!

it is very likely to be the same engine but forget about bhp and topspeed , the first is only a guess for the paperwork , the later is ,how do i say it politly a wish from the owner for a better figure in the paperwork ( if you talk with your friends it sounds better if there is a higher figure in the papers )
its the same like with the gn250 and dr250 , in theory the gn250 was faster , in reality sometimes slower then the dr250
i had a gn250 according paperwork it should have been 76mph fast ,but i was lucky to get 65mph out of it and everything with the bike was ok no faults at all , i had another one wich used 700ml oil every 60 miles but easy reached 80mph so dont trust paperwork

As I remember, ( and it's going back a fair way!) Suzuki offered 3 bikes at the time,The SP400,the GN400 and the DR400. As far as I recall the engine was common to all 3 bikes but there may have been different gearing. I had a DR400 for a while, it was reasonably pokey for a 400, worst thing was the 6V electrics which meant the lights were crap!
I now run a GN250 as a work bike but it struggles to top 70 and tends to burn a lot of oil if you try to thrash it. Ok for a runabout though.
When they came to the end of the production run Suzuki offered hugh discounts on the 400 range. My mate had just bought a DR400 at list price - about £1600 ish- only to find that 4 weeks later it was on offer for just over £700!!! Not a happy bunny!!
