Title: Wheel rebuilds
Post by: Andy M on April 22, 2012, 05:15:44 PM
Gents,

What would be the collective thinking on picking materials when having a spoked wheel rebuilt? Stainless to avoid corrosion or galvanised for strength? What's the take on brass nipples (sounds like a sheep disease or rock band I know and bound to excite Jethro, but I am still talking material choices).

This is the Bonneville BTW, a known snapper of OEM spokes so while this is a second set of wheels bought from the scrappers I won't be doing anything more that shipping them to the builder and telling him to do the necessary.

Cheers

Andy

Have you thought about fitting cast wheels?, just a thought Andy

Ian :)

That is exactly what I have done to my Bonnie outfit !

Knowing full well that spoked wheels can be a pain on an outfit and on top of that a Hinkley Bonnie.
I did look into getting wheels built up that could possibly stronger and last longer between tweeking nipples. But they were a bit expensive.
So I looked into cast wheels, also not cheap but less maintenance.
17"rear cast wheel off the latest Bonnie.Straight in no messing.
Bit of a story wont go into it here but !
19" front cast off late 955 Tiger.
Rim same width, disc same diameter, bearings the same.
Speedo drive electronic on Tiger, mechanical on Bonnie......but both the same size and fit !
All I needed was a 2.5-3mm thick spacer to sit between speedo drive and fork leg to bring the disc into the center of the caliper.Which I happened to have in the shed exactly the right internal and external diameters.

Again not cheap, but will last a lot longer !

OK different spoke patterns and colour. Can be powder coated the same so they wont notice so much.
But Hey ! I don't care I have 3 different Wheels On My Wagon. I will get them painted one day.
Have Fitted and no worries about spokes coming loose or worse still snapping.
