I am about to attempt to adjust the tappets on my 400 and have a service book so have got the clearance figures as there is bog all other information I just want to know if there is anything in the "procedure" that I should be warned about first. I'm a fairly experienced "tinkerer" but more used to mucking around with mouldy old Land Rovers than bikes and just want to know if there's anything out of the ordinary involved.

Nothing out of the ordinary. With a cold engine:
- Remove the two inspection covers on the generator cover
- Remove the spark plug
- Remove valve inspection covers
- Rotate the engine anti-clockwise using the flywheel retaining nut untill you can see the 'T' mark through the smaller inspection window.
- Check the valves to see if on compression or exhaust stroke
- If on exhaust stroke rotate engine 360 degrees
- Check clearance and then refit covers etc.
The screw adjustment screw has a square end which can make it fiddly to turn
