Title: rusty srx tank
Post by: guest1069 on June 27, 2010, 07:21:55 PM
Tank has rusted fron the inside, right hand side near the seat, seam looks ok. Whats the easiest/best way to clean it out before using Petseal? Anyone ever sealed holes using lead solder?

Hi Simon,
I did an SR500 tank a few years ago...I had it bead blasted instead of shotblasting as I was told then that it was "kinder" to the metal...ha ha..I got the tank back ....it was trying to imitate the garden riddle.
So I spent at least 3 evenings soldering ALL the holes then petsealed it. I cant remember the exact details of HOW I soldered it but I only used a small electrical soldering iron and electrical solder....It didnt leak after that...Enclosing a link to  photo of finished bike

Great looking bike Ian. I'm suprised that the electrical solder has held but if it works it works. My Petseal is coming on Wed so I will clean the tank tomorrow. My local shop has taped over the outside of holes before and just Petsealed so I supposed anything other than weld is just acting as a filler.
